will the Lakers ever retire Gasol's jersey?

Post#1 » by Lost Angel » Fri Dec 7, 2012 2:21 pm

he was the #2 player for three NBA Finals run, with two championships.

regardless of if he gets traded or not, when it's all said and done will his jersey be hanging in the rafters?

Without a doubt, but only after he makes the HOF

3 straight finals, 2 rings. he made it possible

you have to say if jerry west only gave the lakers 1 ring, and elgin baylor 0 rings, that gasol has to have a better chance than that

I don't know... when you think of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, you think of guys who gave a lot to the franchise. I don't think West or Baylor were ever on the trading-block.

You could make a pretty good argument in favor of retiring his jersey but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

In terms of what he did for this franchise, yes he deserves to be in the HOF.

My immediate reaction is a swift no, but he was a key part to the last two rings.

I go no though because he does not bring it night in and night out, there have been too many issues over the past two seasons.

Gasol is a HOF lock so yes it will be retired.

Ownership has said that the hall of fame with + quality time w/ the Lakers organization = retired jersey. Gasol certainly will have both as a member of 2 championship teams.

Just think he was 0-12 in the play-offs before coming to the purple and gold. Kobe and Phil made a champion out of Gasol. I hope that Gasol shows up again for the purple and gold.
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

It's a tough call because he's only been with he lakers for five and a half years. Another championship would without a doubt give him a retired jersey.

Depends on what happens after Gasol leaves the Lakers. He would lose a lot of votes from the fans if he were to win a championship elsewhere.

Gasol co-led us to more titles than both of them combined

If you go the bench you get your jersey retired (wink-wink) deal.

yes, for sure. it would be harsh of the lakers not to do so.

despite being a hall of famer, gasol single handedly changed the face of the franchise in 2008 and he delivered.

as a matter of fact, he was the ONLY laker who delivered CONSISTENTLY ON A NIGHTLY BASIS in the playoffs. He guarded the greatest bigs in dwight, garnett, and dirk and held his own ground offensively. Pau was the main reason we beat the celtics in 2010. He was flat out ferocious, end of discussion.

yeah, hes not as great as he was then with the addition of dwight, but put him on any other team and under the basket and i don't see how the guy can't put up 20/10/4 nightly.

3 WCF championships, 2 rings, and a couple of all-star appearances while on the lakers gets his jersey retired without a doubt.

Paus road play in the playoffs outside Utah, who every Laker kicked ass at, sucked. It was down in Boston (KG kicked his ass there like he did his at staples), really down in Phoenix (awful garbage close out), and down in OKC (if he showed up the first 47mins you don't need the tip). Only two lakers had better road than home averages in every series in 2010, Kobe and Fisher. So no he wasn't consistent at all as that was the start of his playing level dip, the tale of two cities in 3/4 playoff rounds. He was our second guy but he wasn't consistent or the best player in the playoffs in any series as we weren't even in the OKC series truly to Kobe had that Keene drained and became Kobe again, defended Westbrook, and went on that year in game 6 when the other lakers sans Fosh and Ron had their thumb up their ass.

HOF lock. And yeah he gets it retired, but not immediately after he retires like with Shaq or with Kobe. In fact Phil should have a jersey retired in staples long before him

Unless the Lakers win more championships Gasol's jersey won't get retired. He was a very good player but not the best player on two championship teams.

Jamaal Wilkes was the same type of player on several 80s championship teams (he scored 20+ ppg in those seasons - better than Gasol), played 9 seasons, scored 10,000 points, and was on 3 championship teams. Why would Gasol get his number tired if Wilkes did not?
