PG D is real issue??
Eveyone keeps saying team problem is small ball or championship hangover or whatever else. The real issue is lack of D from PG's stopping dribble penetration. Our rotations are getting screwed up cause they're having to cover up for their inefficiency. As soon our overall guard play, more Chalmers then Wade picks up I believe we'll see the overall D improve. It's not lack of bigs, its lack of perimeter D. Comments?

Can't agree more. Only solid sequence I've seen so far on the defensive end was when Cole stopped D.Williams from breaking us down. When this is solved I'm in strong belief that our overall defense will improve. It just gets impossible to cover up for them on every possession. It all starts will on-ball-D.

Re: PG D is real issue??
Don't single out the point guards. It's the overall lack of effort from everyone. We used to throw Carlos Arroyo and **** Mike Bibby out there and the defense was still formidable. They just aren't trying as hard. Defense is boring.

Re: PG D is real issue??
Mario Chalmers has had some serious issues this year. Lack of D, poor shooting and overall lack of effort from a guy who needs to play with effort. Wade has superior skill to most, Chalmers does not and yet they play with same effort.
We need a CENTER and a PG who can defend and shoot.
If I'm Riley I would look to trade Chalmers, MM, Joel for a PG or C.

I don't really give a **** about MM or Joel but I have a bit of a soft spot for Mario. He was a huge part of our playoff run last season (arguably our best player outside of the Big 3).
I say we at least give him until the All Star break to turn things around.

Really soft traps that even Krispy Kreme Failton was splitting.
Really weak man defense by Rio and Ray.
Wade has to help too much on dribble penetration, leading to lots of 3s.
It'll get better. It can't get much worse. PEACE.

With Anthony on the court, the team has a 97.8Drtg, as opposed to 109.6 with him off. That's over an 11pt difference, with the offensive difference only being a -6 with him on the court.
He is the team's only shot-blocking presence on the interior, he's the only one who knows how to properly trap off the PnR while being quick enough to rotate properly, and even though he isn't a great rebounder the team's rebounding % is 5% better with him on the floor.
In other words, the team needs the more traditional lineup with Joel at C for decent minutes as opposed to the small-ball thing (however, I struggle calling a team with Joel at C as "traditional"). He really does set the tone for the defense, and covers up for a LOT of mistakes and lapses. He needs more burn.
That's not to say Mario and Cole's play has been even average, and I feel an upgrade could be made, but the real issue has been the interior defense.

I agree, small ball all year isn't going to work.

Bosh is almost as good as Joel on the pnr. He and Rio have done a piss-poor job trapping PGs. I give most of the blame to Rio, because Bosh has done a solid job on defense so far. Rio is so slow getting around the pick that he's usually hanging Bosh or Haslem out to dry, while the guard goes around them into the lane. Rio's lateral quickness is bad this season. You can see it in his man defense. He just can't stay in front of anyone this season. It's gotta be the leg injury.
Joel+Cole was good last night. Cole makes up for his lack of length with great lateral quickness, and great defensive instincts. He's fouling at the same almost-clumsy rate, but he's been playing a lot more aggressively. I notice he's been getting at guys' handles lately too.
I'm warming up to Joel in the rotation. I think it's because he's improved his offensive game again this season. Last season was better than the one before, and that season was better than the one before that. When he fumbles a rebound or drops a nice pass, I cringe. However, it's not like we haven't looked bad without him, so it's not a big deal for me anymore. I still want to see us get out 9 shooter rotation to work, but if Joel is needed to bring balance to the force, then so be it. Can't say Spo didn't give it enough time. He's just doing the smart thing. The Bosh+Joel frontcourt really smothers the pnr well.
I think Ray missing from the closing lineup Saturday says a lot. Ray and Shard have been appalling on defense this season. Shard doesn't seem like he's ever gonna play again. Ray commits a lot of dumb fouls, though he doesn't really get himself in foul trouble. His defense is really shoddy. He seems to play the passing lanes pretty well, but I don't know if that's at a detriment to his pnr and man defense. I see him ballwatching a lot. I'm fine if he's removed from the closing lineup in coming games, but I don't want to see him get disgruntled with his role on the team. He's a valuable asset and incredibly productive, but his defense is borderline cancerous.
We got more work to do, but it won't take long for the rotation to gel with Joel and Cole's increased roles, and maybe we'll see a consistent performance on defense, without sacrificing too much in efficiency on offense. PEACE.
EDIT: A bit more about Bosh. There was a really interesting play in the game where he ran out to trap the ball, and then ran back into the paint and blocked his man's shot near the baseline. He covered and incredible amount of ground in a short time and made it look effortless. I really can't blame him too much for the sloppy traps and pnr defense.

Heat need to stop overhelping and leaving shooters

Is this due to the scheme Spo runs? Protect the paint. But without extra effort in regular season, players aren't recovering to the shooters quick enough.

Plus, Rio looks quite fat to me. Has he put on a lot of weight during the offseason?
