Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez could receive about $217,000 for coaching in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Alvarez, who has an annual salary of $1 million as athletic director, is to receive 1/12th of Bret Bielema's total compensation package for coaching in the game.

The proposal must be approved by the UW Board of Regents.

Bielema, who stepped down as UW's head coach to take over the Arkansas program, had an annual compensation package worth about $2.6 million.

"I'm not doing it for free," Alvarez said after a UW athletic board meeting Friday. "I'm getting paid 1/12 of the coach's salary, which is fair."

Alvarez will be filling two positions - athletic director and football coach - until he hires a replacement for Bielema.

"I'm running back and forth," he said Friday when asked how his daily routine had changed since Bielema left the program Tuesday. "I tell you what. . . my adrenaline is flowing. I can't sleep. I'm up at 4 in the morning and I just lay there until 5 and then get started."

Alvarez reiterated Friday he will not rush to hire a replacement.

"I'd like to get somebody in here," he said. "But I'm not going to set a date and say I have to have someone in here.

"I want to get the right person."

Asked what might happen if he couldn't hire the person he wanted, Alvarez said:

"I'll find the right person. Because you know what that next (question) will be.

"I'm not going there. I'm not even going to start that."

The question to which he referred: Could Alvarez see himself coaching the team in 2013?

"No," he said. "I don't want to start that."

Before he spoke to reporters, Alvarez informed the members of the athletic board that the decision to add Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten Conference was made not only to expand the footprint of the league but also to ensure Penn State remains a member.

Alvarez lauded Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany for making the recent moves.

"Jim has tremendous vision," Alvarez told the board. "He really thinks outside the box and thinks of the future. The decision to add these two will really benefit us more in the future.

"If you study the demographics and take a look at where the population is, we are in the rust belt and continue to lose population.

"That Northeast corridor, all the way to the south, continues to grow. . . . Jim felt that someday, if we didn't have anyone else in that corridor, someday it wouldn't make sense maybe for Penn State to be in our league. That they would go into a league somewhere on the East Coast. By doing that, it keeps us in the Northeast corridor."

Alvarez said one other school was interested in joining the Big Ten but the league presidents were not interested because of the team's academic profile.

He did not identify that school.

Addressing the expansion issue after the board meeting, Alvarez said if the Big Ten lost Penn State it could keep the conference out of the East Coast entirely.

"That is something you look at down the road," he said. "You look at 10 years and we continue to lose population and then you sit back and say: 'What happened?'

"We could sit there with 12 for the time being and be fine, but if there is continued expansion (by others) there is the potential for problems down the road.

"I thought Jim had it studied very well."
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I guess I'm a little disappointed seeing that we are paying Barry $217,000 for coaching in the Rose Bowl, unless of course that was money that was already budgeted for Bielema and he forfeited it.

I sort of would figure that given what he's made at Wisconsin over his tenure and as AD that he'd be able to step up for three weeks and do the coaching without asking for a windfall for it.

It's part of Bielema's salary.

There was a hint of Jim Calhoun's "Not a dime back!" mentality in that interview with Barry. Whatever, it's probably not easy running a D-1 Athletic Department (including interviewing coaching candidates) while also preparing a football team for a BCS Bowl game.

Wow.....Tommy Tuberville is going from Texas Tech to Cincinnati...huh?? I will be disappointed if UW does not make a splash with their head coaching position.

I find it hard to believe Cincinnati is a better job than Texas Tech. At least Texas Tech is in the Big 12.

Agreed. Cincinnati has been the epitome of a stepping stone school the past few years.

He's starting to feel the heat in Texas and I would guess probably wanted to get out and get a fresh start while he could, because a year from now who knows what type of job offers he may get

So, I would've rather they booted Penn State from the conference then sullied it by adding two substandard programs.

The Big Ten didn't even threaten to boot Penn State. They were just worried that Penn State would leave for more of an East Coast Conference if we didn't add more teams in the East. That's really dumb. Are we really afraid Penn State is going to leave to join the Big East which is falling apart and grabbing every mediocre program they can or the ACC? If they want to leave fine but they only contribute in football anyways and haven't really been great contributors there lately.

If the B1G had any stones, they would've kicked PSU out and given ND a godfather offer to stay at 12.

I know. I'm saying I would prefer that they did so.

Walmart's headquarters are in Arkansas. The family have been huge boosters for the athletic department.

From everything I have heard and read, Wal Mart definitely gives a lot to the university but not to the athletic department. Lots of oil money like good ol Jerry though

I kind of predicted this a few pages back.
