OJ Mayo

Post#1 » by Han Solo » Sun Dec 9, 2012 10:00 pm

Any shot we get him with the FA money we will have this offseason?

Seems we could be one of the teams that can offer the most.

Dude can shoot it, little undersized though at 6'4.

Thoughts?

Knight
Mayo
Prince/Singler
Monroe
Drummond

Not bad.

I like Mayo, but after Gordon who was also undersized and mainly just a streaky shooter too, I'm leary of giving big money to another SG like that. I also think Cuban is going to give him big money if he continues to play at this level the rest of the year. So I doubt we'd be in play for him anyways. In other words, he's not worth overspending for, imo

This just speaks out at me Gordon Gordon Gordon! If Dumars signs him, then I'll jump on the Fire Dumars wagon.

brandon is already a scoring guard, he is truly effective when he is our first option on offense, stuckey the same but a lil better at play making ability. i think it will be a problem with all this type of guard, ther is no true PG and to many scoring mindset, brandon could be as good as mayo with time and for a lower cost.
first of all find SF replacement and TRUE point guard and this team will have all the tools to work in this league.
An upgrad in the frontcourt will be a solid plus (in term of quality) jerbeko monroe villa maxiell at PF is weak repalce jerebko max and villa this off season by a quality big to have a 3 big rotation monroe /drummond an the new one, and slava in case of...

There is no way we're going to get Mayo...After this season Cuban will probably offer Mayo a huge 5 year deal and the best we could offer is 4 years...

Yeah. He's getting 12 mil+ guaranteed if he continues to play at this level...

I think some of the people on this board will never be satisfied...there are so few good SGs in the league. If you have the opportunity to get one, you gotta go do it. If we could get Harden, you would find someone here talking about how he isn't a good fit or gets paid to much instead of being glad to have a legitimate SG.

OJ Mayo is NOT, I repeat NOT Ben Gordon. BG was a one dimensional player. He's a shooter. Spot up, off screens, off the dribble...and he has a ok but still below average drive game. OJ Mayo is a far more complete player.

Forget about size and evaluate the player. Remember Joe Dumars was 6'3(and yeah, I know he played defense at a high level).

No, we get caught up with these players that underachieve majority of their career and then have a good year and want to sign them. Rather go after monta ellis

I disagree. His first two years he averaged 18.5 and 17.5ppg. Then he got benched and put up decent, but yeah, underachieving numbers. So he has actually been a pretty good scorer for a large part of his career, and the present is more important than the past.

Not a huge fan of Monta tbh, but he can definitely score...something we lack. Albeit inefficiently.

I'd sign him in a heartbeat, but only if we got rid of Stuckey.

Mayo is playing well but remember Dirk is out. I'd like to see how he does when Dirk comes back. The problem in Memphis was Mayo couldn't handle being a second option. I think with the Pistons locked into Stuckey and Prince. The idea of adding Mayo, which would cost 10 mill min starting, is salary cap suicide. I'd like to see t he Pistons add a SG in teh draft. My Shabazz dreams are fading fast.

if we cant get a shooting guard that will start from day 1 then we need to sign one. we need a scoring shooting guard in the worst way. mayo would be our number one guy anyways. going forward with bk/mayo/singler(?)/gmoe/drums and adding to the bench..we would be turning it around fast

If Joe would have been awake last off season he would have added a Mayo or Beasley type recent lotto pick for our MLE. But hey, at least we saved that money to pay the $25 or so mil we owe CV and Prince the next few years.

To be fair to Dumars, Stuckey looked like the better option at the end of last year.

And Beasley has been absolutely horrible. Phoenix is regretting that contract already.

Don't miss the forest from the trees. My point was there were numerous very recent lotto picks available as potential breakout guys and we were only casually mentioned. Sure Beasley hasn't broken out like Mayo, but Mayo does show there were some potential diamonds in the scrap heap. Is there a fear of being burnt? Of course. But if Joe is so afraid of being burnt he won't even strike a match then we have a serious issue.

I think there is a good shot we go after Mayo. But, I agree with those worried that it may be another Ben Gordon situation. But, if we did get Mayo and he continued to play well it would be huge, and the situation is different now that Stuck is ok with coming off the bench and is playing well there.

Knight/Stuckey
Mayo/English
Prince/Singler
Monroe/2013 First
Drummond/Slava

We'd make the playoffs, I think. If we could get Mayo for 10-12 per a year, then id say go for it. If hes looking for 14 a year then its an easy no.

I haven't watched Mayo play much. The main thing I would worry about is "Can he play Defense?!?!?"

He doesn't have the sexy defensive stats but he gets up and pressures his man. His on the ball defense is very aggressive.
