The man was in Madison on Monday for an interview.

EDIT: My original response to Petersen being a candidate.

I just see that as an unrealistic target. I would love him, but he's got it made in Boise. Great college town, no competition consistently in great bowl games. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure every program with a HC vacancy has given him a ring.

I had enough facts presented to me to legitimately believe we had a shot at him, so my feelings changed a bit.

I haven't seen any concrete evidence on this. You had their AD saying he hadn't even begun the process, you have Alvarez saying that he has only interviewed 1, soon to be 2 guys on the radio. It's all a game and you have no idea who to believe there.

Some writers said they heard he was. Some say he said "no thanks" a while ago. I'd be interested to see something more concrete on Petersen actually being there.

It never got fully confirmed either way in the media whether he was in Boise or Madison. I had heard from a trusted friend who is a well-connected Badger booster that the interview took place.

He had a scheduled presser that day in Boise and never showed, that's about the best evidence that can be found on the interwebz. If you go by that, then yeah no proof of anything.

Seems to me that Diaco or a left field hire is what we're in for now. But the way this has been going, I am not going to fully believe anything until it comes out of Barry's yapper.

I still think Mel Tucker is a candidate, despite his public statements. I also think Diaco could be the guy, too.

Either way, my general philosophy is that you shouldn't believe anything you read until a coach is hired. Too much history of coaches saying one thing and doing another.

Don't want Diaco heard he is a flake and not a great recruiter....starting to think whoever it is will be someone further down the list. I guess this program isn't what many of us thought it was, really expected to get a guy better the Bielema.

There's a lot of respect for Alvarez in college football circles but he's also 66 and who knows how long he'll be around.

Is that a bad thing? He casts a long shadow and by him telling coaches what style of play he wants basically handcuffs them to a certain extent. My guess is that they will settle on some unproven assistants who is supposedly some great recruiter simply because Barry can manipulate him. A big part of the problem at UW might be the fact the AD makes so much money that they are not able to pay their coach or his assistants well enough.

I realize they aren't winning National Championships because of some tactical flaws or late shortcomings by the last few teams, but can you argue with the results over the guy he "manipulated" and was low paid over the last 7 years or so?

On paper Diaco seems like he'd be a great hire, but I don't know much about college football.

My point was Barry will likely retire soon rather than later so a new coach won't nevessarily be working with him very long and a new AD will likely do things in a different way at least to some extent.

xTitan, since you dislike the idea of Diaco so much, what does your current short-list look like? Think I recall you being a Tucker guy?

I still love the idea of Paul Rhoads, myself.

Rick Pizzo ‏@BTNRickPizzo
#Badger sources tell me the Wisconsin job was never officially offered to Al Golden. I'm told there was interest, but no actual offer.

That honestly means nothing to me. Of course they'd come out and say that after the guy apparently turned them down.

I still love the idea of Paul Rhoads, myself.

I read things about Diaco in terms of immaturity (somewhat like BB) and over-rated as a recruiter. Boston College and Temple have not hired Diaco and I think another lesser program passed on him as well, there must be a reason.

I have read in a few different places that Rhoads has a $6M buyout, I think UW would not pay that money, especially for an unproven commodity.

Until someone tells me Petersen is not a candidate, I would have him #1 and Tucker #2. I am just going by some of the names we have heard, I don't love Tucker, but I like the fact he has a strong combination of knowing what he would be getting in to, pro background, perhaps ability to bring in strong assistants with NFL ties, and it doesn't hurt that he is black (just being honest).

This is **** ridiculous!

Not believing anything until Barry is up there in front of the cameras with the new HC. 99% of all reports regarding this coaching search have been false or speculation.

If the report is true that the Golden offer report was false, then us dreamers can keep Petersen on the list. :D

Agreed, just thought it was interesting, plus perhaps Golden's people let it leak he was offered in hopes of raising his stock as well, we just don't know.

I read somewhere that Rhoades has some ridiculous buyout. Like 5+ million. If true, cross him off the list.
