I always figured he was around until our youngsters started producing and then we would go out and get a good manager.

I don't get to analyze managers around the majors, but if I had to make a list of the best managers in baseball, Yost would probably be in the top-3.

Just curious as to why?

My main gripe is with his handling of the pen. Other than that, I don't have huge issues with him.

Ned sure does some head scratchers. Melvin needs to get another lefty in the pen. NOW.

That would be an excellent move for the purpose of balancing the roster, as it certainly would serve to attend to a great (if not our greatest) need. Unfortunately, it does nothing to address the problem of Yost trotting out and sticking with Turnbow/Wise/Shouse in close game, late inning situations regardless of matchups and/or whether or not the chosen reliever seems to "have it" on that particular day -which is a great (if not our greatest) problem-.

I must add that I derive my observations of Yost's seemingly illogical tendencies not only from some of the recent abasements (please do not ask me to recount my favorites, as I would get way more pleasure from doing so than is healthy), but as much or more so from many of the bullpen decisions made last year after the all-star break, when it began to feel as though he wouldn't give up on using Wise or Turnbow at key points until each players ERA's ballooned to over 4.5 or more. That is by far the biggest issue I have with Yost. He is an OK manager for a developing pitching staff where it is helpful to show confidence in struggling guys. On a contending team, however, what is needed is a manager who will not just pick a guy to pitch an inning and then stick with him unless the game is blown, but rather will chose a guy he thinks is right for the situation and then will reevaluate the situation after each at bat. Also, someone needs to mention to Yost that IT IS NOT DISHONORABLE TO HAVE MULTIPLE GUYS WARMING UP IN THE PEN AT THE SAME TIME!

Not once this year after watching a close Brewers win have I ever thought to myself 'wow, Yost really outmaneuvered the other guy'. It would be nice to have a manager about whom that sentiment might be possible to have on occasion, not to mention that if we make the playoffs it is almost inevitable that the managers ability to make such decisions wisely will decide a game or two per series.

At this point I hope that it is and always was Melvin's plan. :D

I think we all could have figured that out with this statement below.

but if I had to make a list of the best managers in baseball, Yost would probably be in the top-3.

Then how do the Twins do it?
They dont have great players. Very average. A great pitcher. Yost tends to stick with certain things. If we are leading in the 8th who are we going to see? Turnblow. How predicable is that.

His in game managing is just flat awful and our team is winning despite him.
In the playoffs this **** **** is going to cost us possible championships if we get to the playoffs.

It's Yost's management of the bullpen. Is it illegal for him to use Cordero for more than a 3 out save? How long did it take him to figure out Shouse was only a LOOGY? Why did he stick with Turnbow that long in Philadelphia when it was clear he didn't have it? Why did he stick with Turnbow yesterday after 2 consecutive walks?

Its not the home run hungry offense

This team can play small ball but why does Yost ALWAYS do that fake bunt pull back and swing crap with the pitchers and then a few days ago have Weeks bunt with two strikes?

Seriously some of his moves are just baffling.

You continue to defend a manager who makes lineup choices and late game decisions which make it more difficult for the Brewers to win and I'm the crazy one?

Even the most ardent Yost supporter such as yourself must admit he has a poor feel for when to lift a starter.

neverstoppers, please keep in mind, I'm not making the claim that Yost's decisions are the most important cause of this or that particular losing streak. What I'm trying to show is that Ned has what I consider to be the most egregious deficiency that a baseball manager can possibly have, which is the inability to learn from mistakes (and adjust to situations). If you had read my previous posts carefully you would have realized I'm not a so called "chicken little" who is making an argument for the replacement of Yost out of frustration caused by recent events, but instead based on evidence gathered over the course of the last two seasons. Its nothing personal against Yost, I just think that if it is possible that a managerial change would be in the best interests of this team then we as fans should have the debate. Trust me, my opinion is one that has been fermenting for more then a year, and recent events have simply made it impossible for me to keep quiet. Hopefully, if a change is not made, I will be proven wrong. At this point I dont think that's likely.

The problem I have with Nedly is that he sticks with guys that are struggling far too often. Jenkins last season, Hall and Weeks this season, and that doesn't get into the bullpen management.
