What about Josh Johnson's extention talks?

Post#1 » by number15 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 10:23 pm

He was the main piece in the Marlins trade. AA admitted it all started after he inquired about Josh Johnson. Marlins wanted too much, thus deal was expanded.

I think JAYS need to take a risk and lock up Johnson to a 3-4 year deal even with his injury history, as he is currently willing.

If Jays go into the season without a deal, and say Johnson starts taring it up, i doubt he will talk extension. He could be the top SP in Free Agency next offseason. Look what Geinke got..... also that would suck for the JAYS as they'd lose him for nothing more than a compensation pick.

The time is now, to lock him up..... or risk a MUCH bigger price tag later

75 million over 5 years should satisfy both sides

It would be stupid to let JJ walk after betting the future for the present. But having seen the latest move, I wouldn't be surprised if they chose that route. The Stupid is strong with this franchise at the moment.

After the Sanchez deal, he is most likely going to go out and try to have a good season and go to FA.

If you were his agent what would you advise he do?

Probably go out and try to have a good season, and go to FA. The money that is being thrown around, he could easily get something like 5/100 or more. Even if he has a bad season/injury riddled, he could probably get something like 3/30-40 mill, imo.

What about you?

Pretty sure Johnson's agent is looking for a bigger one.

Would rather extend him now on an off year for a few years than wait till he goes off for a monster year. Hopefully its the next thing on the agenda when the dust settles with R.A.

I don't want to be the agent that advised his client to turn down 75 million dollars in guaranteed money 4 months before tearing a ligament in his elbow

So, if my client was okay with the idea of playing in Toronto long term, then I would advise that he take the money

Plus, I get 5%

AA on the fan tonight said something like " he hopes Josh Johnson is a part of this too" when talking about how Dickey, Bautista, Encarnacion & Reyes, etc were all locked up for the next 3 or 4 years..

So AA seems interested in locking up Johnson.

Well Johnson said he's open to it and vice versa. Like I said in the other thread, we might have to wait till season starts before anything. Plus AA knows he has time to negotiate a deal, prob wants to focus on other spots or maybe just take a break lol.

I suspect Anthopoulos will try to extend him like he extended Bautista a few years back before the season started.

both sides don't wanna sign an extention. he has an injury history and this is a contract season why he can get even a bigger contract that he can get right now. i don't see him coming back in ANY situation.

Even with a torn ligament he is worth 75M/5 years. The guys a monster, we can't afford to resign him anymore so this thread is pointless IMO.

I'm betting on around 120M/5 years if we wait, 5 years 100M if we sign him now.

You maybe right about it costing 5/100 to get him inked now, but AA usually gets players signed to pretty decent extensions.

Plus, we can always sign Johnson and trade Buehrle next off season and have him replaced by Hutch or Drabek, etc..

It's not impossible to have him extended this season.

I will be very surprised if Johnson signs an extension before the season. The market for starting pitching is insane right now, and with a good season Johnson will be in line for a massive raise. It would be a risk for Johnson to avoid an extension (he could get hurt), but I think he will take that risk. He has a chance to make a ton of money if he tests the market next off-season. He would probably be the top pitcher available, unless Halladay is there as well (not sure if that will be the case since Doc has some vesting options that I am too lazy to look up).

We can't trade Buehrle unless we did it now. He's not even that good, the only value comes in that he can pitch a ton of innings. His contract is so backloaded, who wants a 3.9 ERA 18M/year pitcher? Nobody. You can almost sign JJ for that price. We'd have to send so much money in the trade to get anything reasonable of value.
