I think most people have warmed up to this, but I will still stick to the bold statement that Andersen's name is bigger than Chryst, Golden, Diaco, and any other reasonable candidate 3-4 years from now. Tucker probably bigger because he's going to be an NFL head coach someday and Petersen's will still loom larger, but he wasn't a realistic candidate.

Seeing some USA Today tweets about the highest paid assistants in the Big Ten. Looks like Wisconsin is in the bottom 3. Wonder how much more they'll pay the new coaching staff, have to imagine the'll spend a little more since BB cited that as a major reason for leaving.

I sure hope so. There is absolutely no reason for not paying them more, considering the success/profitability of our university.

It's really not profitable at all.

It's profitable until they pay off all of the other athletic programs. It could be profitable...plus as GBPM said before, there is some book-cooking going on.

I guess I meant in comparison with other B1G teams. I assumed we did better than the bottom 7 or so teams of the conference money-wise to justify having a more plentiful assistant coach salary pool?

This was from back on page 49:

These are 2011 figures and they represent the revenue each athletic department brings in, operating expenses and the profit. As you can see, Wisconsin was right up against it:

(in millions: revenue / expenses / profit)

PSU: $116.1 / $101.3 / $14.8
Michigan: $122.7 / $111.8 / $10.9
Ohio State: $131.8 / $122.2 / $9.6
Purdue: $66.2 / $59.4 / $6.8
Iowa: $93.3 / $88.5 / $4.8
Illinois: 77.8 / 73.4 / $4.4
Indiana: $71.9 / $68.3 / $3.6
Nebraska: $83.6 / $81.9 / $1.7
Wisconsin: $96.28 / $95.62 / $.66
MSU: $84.5 / $84.00 / $0.5
Minnesota: $78.9 / $78.9 / $0.0

Compare that to a few other schools:

Alabama: $124.4 / $105.5 / $18.9
Texas: $150.2 / $133.6 / $16.6
Florida: $123.5 / $107.1 / $16.4
Arkansas: $91.7 / $79.3 / $12.4

4th in revenue, but 9th in profit. They money they take in they're spending.

The Badgers, however, without looking at figures, probably take in revenue about $80 million on football. Probably revenue $12 million on basketball and let's say $4 million in hockey.

Football maybe costs $40 million, basketball $5 million, hockey $4 million or something.

The other 40 million or whatever from football revenues goes into women's hockey, volleyball, etc.

Football is extremely profitable so if you wanted to, you can shift around the profits and pay the coaches more. Obviously that may include things like not having volleyball, which probably aren't feasible.

But the point is that football is extremely profitable. Athletic programs with a bunch of other sports are not profitable.

Texas football profited $80 million last year

The problem is that we are choosing to dump more of the profits into women's basketball and the likes.

Wow, those statistics are incredible. Don't know how I missed that. 4th in revenue and 9th in profit? Something needs to change, like yesterday.

The only sports that should get meaningful chunks of that revenue should be Football, Men's BBall and Men's Hockey.

Yea. As with virtually every other university, Football pays for everything else in the athletic department.

I think I saw this on GH, but the SEC has fewer sports than Big Ten schools. Seems like most of the SEC has in the 15-18 range and most of the Big Ten is over 20. That means even if the Big Ten's profits equalled the SEC's profits for football, the Big Ten still couldn't spend as much on football because of the 6-7 extra sports they need to support.

Yeah, that is known...just saying there is "profit" to work with, technically.

BB interview

Potentially coaching UW in Rose Bowl against Stanford: “When I took the job I sat down with coach Alvarez and I said to him ‘Coach, I will do anything that you want me to do moving forward. I’m gonna hire some assistants to come with me at Arkansas but I won’t take them to Arkansas until after the Rose Bowl. If you want me to coach in the game, I’ll do it.' I said that knowing that it probably wouldn’t be able to materialize just because it’s too difficult of a situation and I love those kids at Wisconsin. They’ve done some unbelievable things. They all have very, very bright futures and that’s the flip side of this move that it was probably the hardest thing in my life to endure. To stand in front of them and tell them my decision to move forward. Thankfully a lot of them got up and gave me a great hug walking out the door."

On leaving Wisconsin for Arkansas: “First, the SEC, in the world of college football has set itself apart and as an assistant I was tempted a couple times to jump into this league with some opportunities. I didn’t do it, and then as a head coach there had been some things pop up and I just couldn’t resist the opportunity. . . . Arkansas being the lone state school, something that really intrigued me and also just the tradition and the history that’s here, we’d love to have an opportunity to give it its first SEC championship.

“I go back to my first year. I was approached by an NFL team after we went 12-1. . . at that time didn’t even think of it as realm of possibility and as we’ve had success over the last couple years, some options have come my way. You know coaches can play coy all they want, you know when those things come out in the media - the only reason they come out is because coaches want them to. I kept things to myself. Just myself and a few occasions our athletic director became aware of them . . . I was just so comfortable at Wisconsin and really was excited about what we’re building. I fulfilled my original contract of five years and extended it two more years to seven and just really felt it was time.”

On Wisconsin sending players to the NFL : “At Wisconsin we tried to put as many big people on the field as they’d allow us. So it’s a little different there, but it’s gonna be a blending. . . The last two years we had 12 players sign NFL contracts. The next highest number I believe was Alabama at eight. Last year we had 12 again and the next highest number was Oklahoma with nine. I think we put more players in the league through the draft and free agent because what we build year-round. It’s not just a Saturday game day effect, it’s what they are 24/7, 365 days a year. They’re built with a pro-style offense in mind and it’s truly one they’ve been rewarded for.”

On the offensive transition from spread to pro-style: “It’ll be immediate here. . . . I know as a head coach you’ve got to blend your style to what they currently have so as we recruit players that fit what we want better and more, it’ll be a slow process but on the same account you know I met with 21 seniors here before they left town. My message was to them, ‘Hey I’m not trying to be great three years from now, I want to be great next year.' We want to be a team that kind of comes onto the scene. Not a lot of people are expecting big things out of us.”

After reading about it Andersen looks like a very good hire. Alvarez is still coaching the Rose Bowl right?

I have no ill will towards BB, but I legitimately think the Arkansas job is a bad one. If you're going to hold out for an SEC job, get one in the Eastern division.

OK boys, this is Andersen's first interview with Mike Lucas....youtube interview. I came away very impressed, love the defensive philsophy, understands hire quality assistants with Midwest ties for recruiting, and the offensive part will be real interesting, wants power running, passing, and some option. I would feel very good right now if I am Bart Houston....he does all three.
