The thing is JPA is terrible at catching balls in general. Thole had a lot of PB due to the nature of the knuckleball, but still was considered "good" at catching them. JPA already had 9 passed balls last season catching standard pitches, and Thole had twice that at 18. 13 of the passed balls were Knuckleballs. If JPA is also "good" at catching them, we are talking about 22+ PB's

JPA is a swiper. he swipes his glove to snag any potential wild pitches.
if he works on his body positioning, he'll be a better all-around catcher.
i assume that he has enough brains to work on something like that in the off season.
he was a better catcher this year than his rookie year. so i have some hope.

^^Hopefully he's working with Wakamatsu this offseason, because he seemed to help him a lot.

I have hope that he can eventually be a decent defensive catcher, but Thole is good at catching the knuckleball and still he averaged a passed ball every other start (for Dickey). If JPA tried to catch that thing, I don't care how hard he worked this offseason, he won't be better than Thole.

I think its absurd to try and burden JPA with catching a knuckleballer when he struggled catching... any ball in 2012. Maybe he could work on it and try and do it in 2014 once he is a bit better and more polished but I think this season anyways should be written off in terms of that.

Catchers typically only catch 120-130 games a year anyways, it just means he gets scheduled rest. I don't see a problem with Thole catching 40+ games in a season.
