mg wrote:The Kings have already traded their 2013 pick (protected) to Cleveland in that Hickson deal last year so we can nix that idea.

well they can trade it if it falls under the protection. im not sure if they have to wait till the season is over to tade the pick or if its just that the cavs get it if the protection is not in play and we get it if the protection is in play.
this is how the protection pans out for the cav's and the kings pick.
"top 13 protected in 2013, top 12 in 2014, top 10 protected in 2015 and 2016, otherwise a 2nd round pick in 2017"
So, i know they can trade it if it stays with the kings. but i am not sure if they have to wait till its locked in or not first.

With the Kings future in Sacremento up in the air i doubt they would want to trade any future picks

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

Where can I learn about "protected" and "unprotected" picks? (What it means, exactly) Or if someone wouldnt mind giving the short version of it? Thanks.

What about this deal:

Wiz trade Emeka+Crawford for Derrick Williams+Roy+Stitsma (expiring/team option).

Minny gets a much needed backup C and a much needed SG who is cheap for another year.

It basically means that you are trading a pick, but you put conditions on when you have to actually give it to the other team. Here is a simplistic example:

Let's say the Wizards hypothetically trade John Wall at the trade deadline to the Charlotte Bobcats for a first round pick that is "top 3 protected in 2013" and "unprotected" after that.

Fast forward to the lottery - if the Bobcats' pick ends up being #4 or lower, then the pick goes to Washington to complete the trade. But if the pick is 1, 2 or 3 then Charlotte gets to keep the pick and Washington will instead get Charlotte's 2014 pick (no matter what it is).

It can get more complicated than that, but I think that sums up the concept. If anyone else wants to chime in with a better example, feel free.

Bargnani is to "Center" as Nick Young is to "Shooting Guard." One of the worst players at his position in the league.

There is no trade we could make to acquire him that would be of any benefit. Unless he's expiring -- haven't looked.

Thanks, I think I get it now.. It basically (in a nutshell) protects a team from trading what is expected to be a late first round pick, for what ends up being a lotto pick, if they have an unforeseen terrible season?

Essentially, yes, although the protection can vary and even go beyond the lottery. Here's a link that has a list of the outstanding trades, including what protections (if any) are placed on them:

If there was ever a time to strike while the iron is hot for Cousins, it's now.

Big Cuz got into an altercation with Keith Smart at halftime of the Kings/Clips game yesterday and wasn't allowed to play the 2nd half. He's issued apologies to his coach and teammates today but word on the street is that he has worn thin on even his teammates.

Offer a package centered around our 2013 1st rounder (top-3 protected) and Kevin Seraphin. Add incentives/fillers where needed.

Wall/(FA)
Beal/Crawford/Martin
Ariza/Webster/Singleton
Nene/Booker/Vesely
Cousins/Okafor

Seraphin has good value....no way would the price be Seraphin and our first rounder....I'd put package together centered around Seraphin or the pick....not both.

We would need to get more for making them one of the most talented young teams in the NBA. Wall/Monroe/Drummond would be ridiculous.

I disagree that Seraphin has good value. I think people don't know much about him. His numbers aren't terribly impressive and our team is obviously trash. Seraphin wouldn't be enough to net Cousins. It's a pipe dream to think that's realistic.

Our 1st rounder certainly has value but it would be top-3 protected. This draft is incredibly weak and the only real value seems to be with the top 3 or 4 guys (Noel, Muhammed, Zeller). We'd likely still have our 1st rounder this season considering we'd finish with one of the worst records in the league.

If anything, I think Sacramento would reject a deal centered around Seraphin and our 1st.

Cousins will need a stable franchise with a strong-willed coach in order to reach his potential, if he ever does. I don't think the Wizards have what it takes to take on a guy like that and shepherd his development.

I wouldn't particularly want to take on a seeming headcase like Cousins AND also give up something of solid value. Maybe something like this:

Wizards trade: Okafor, Ariza, Singleton, and Crawford
Wizards receive: Cousins, Salmons (final year only $1M guaranteed), and Barea

Kings trade: Cousins, Salmons, and Jimmer
Kings receive: Okafor, Ridnour, and Singleton

Wolves trade: Ridnour and Barea
Wolves receive: Ariza and Crawford

Eh, doesn't look as good for Sacto once I typed it out but maybe somebody can improve on it.

IDK i think knight and there unprotected first for wall is probably not a bad trade and they would probably do it. But, do you think of
knight, singler, and kravtsov with their first
for
wall and NYK's second round pick? maybe toss in singleton or something like tomas?
I'm just thinking of the possibility of getting len and noel. that would be one hell of a front court.

as for the kings trade our pick this year is off limits !!! weak draft or not if we draft right we could still get a good player. maybe a 2014 or 15 unprotected or top 3 protected but not this year, no way. and do we really want the trouble that comes with him?
