Nivek, I think you accidentally juxtaposed those FT% numbers. I recall you saying a day or two ago that Beal is a better FT shooter than your average young SG.

Yes he did. Beal is shooting 84%.

He didn't play tonight. He hurt his lower back going up for a dunk. Tonight was a gametime decision and they rested him so tomorrow looks up in the air.

Pistons fan here, I come in peace...I think Cousins would be a perfect fit for the Wizards since he's falling out with the Kings organizations...You guys should trade Nene, Beal, and Vesely for Cousins, Hayes, and Salmons...I think Cousins would be a good fit playing with John Wall again...

Cousins is not worth Beal and Nene. Nene alone is better than Cousins. Cousins is a headcase with an average at best basketball IQ. Don't want that piece of crap on my team. And I wouldn't trade a 19 year old guard with a lot of upside for an inefficient headcase. We can just wait until Cousins becomes a free agent in a few years.

The time to trade for players is when their value is at an all-time low, which Cousins' is right now. We don't know how he'll perceived by the time he's a FA.

Where the other GMs can only see "all-time low," visions of 8th seeds dance in EG's head. Problem is, their value tends to get even lower once they arrive, and only goes back up when they leave.

cousins and wall compliment. make it happen! they built for each other.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

Is Beal going to be a bust?

Post#730 » by Dark Faze » Wed Dec 26, 2012 3:18 pm

I feel like it's happening to us again. I argued with some members of this board that I'd far prefer MKG despite our shooting needs because I wasn't sold on Beals "premier" talent, which was shooting. MKG was a proven product defensively, in transition, rebounds, finishing, etc.

And now I'm afraid I may have been right :\. To this day we still haven't seen any evidence whatsoever that Beal can shoot other than, "well he looks like he can shoot!". He literally hasn't looked like a shooter in live games through college or the NBA thus far. Is he living through reputation as a good highschool shooter? I don't know his HS stats.

And then to hear that we didn't even trade for Beals incredibly hard to reach ceiling (James Harden)...it just tears me apart man.

Somebody give me some reason to believe that Beal is going to be a good player. I NEVER like touching any SG's under 6'4 either...this sucks man.

I share some of your concerns, Dark Faze, though it's worth noting that MKG was never an option for us because Charlotte took him at #2. I moved your post here where this has already been debated a bit. I brought this up on page 45 of this thread:

nate33 wrote:Beal remains a TERRIBLE shooter. I'm so sick of watching him brick open looks.

He's the exact opposite of what I expected. I was hoping for a good spot up shooter who would probably be a bit lacking in other aspects of the game. What we've got is a pretty good all around player who defends, hits the glass, passes pretty well, and can get to the rim; but he can't shoot a lick. The guy barely hits the rim sometimes.

I guess the good news is that shooting improves over time to a greater degree than defense, passing and rebounding; so maybe he'll pan out to be okay. But in the meantime, I'm at the point where I cringe every time he takes a perimeter shot.

Agreed Nate, but I don't know that Charlotte wanted MKG to the point where they wouldn't have considered an offer from us to move up. Charlotte has a lot of needs and I know they were pretty high on T-Rob at the time (some fans still are).

Another thing is that I'm not confident that out front office made the Beal pick with a certainty. I had the feeling that they were trying guys out and honestly had no idea what to do. It really came off as if Ernie decided to go with the general concensus that we'd go with Beal because "we needed shooting" according to the media. There were never any real discussions about him having great workouts. There WERE discussions about us having great workouts with MKG. I think Ernie was afraid to budge and when Beal dropped to us he was able to make the easy decision.

I just don't know what Ted is waiting for. We need a GM to start dealing slowly now in preparation for the draft, or at least scouting early and seeing what could best suit our team. It's got me thinking that Ernie is definitely going to get one more pick for the Wizards...and it just makes me sick.

Beal is now shooting 29% from 3-point range. John freaking Wall shot a better percentage from 3 in his rookie year.

Rookie John Wall also shot better than Beal in the 3-9 foot range (Wall shot .261, Beal .231) and in the 10-16 foot range (Wall shot .308, Beal .250).

Beal is better from 16-23 feet (.400 to Wall's .316) but it's worth noting that Beal is probably getting a lot more open looks going by the assist data. Wall was assisted on just 18% of his 16-23 ft midrange jumpers. Beal is assisted on 72% of his.

Beal is playing better, reqally just because he's being more aggressive. I like some of what I've seen and I think there will be a good jump from yr 1 to yr 2. That bring said, I still don't like the pick. He's not a franchise player and many of the concers discussed pre-draft have shown to be true (i.e size, shooting %, handles, aggressiveness). The other issue is he can ONLY play the 2. He boxes in our draft day options coming up. He offers no versatility so will this team still draft a 2 if its the best player on the board? What is Shabazz doesn't measure tall enough to play the 3?? Knowing this FO, they plug holes so will they pass on the better prospect to fill a need? I like Beal and hope he excels, but his pick just boxed us in at the 2 guard for a good, but not dynamic prospect....

FWIW Shabazz's standing reach of 8'8" is only .5" shorter than MKG's.

Beal shot 73% from the field in HS, not sure what he shot from 3.

http://highschoolhoop.com/high-school-s ... -the-year/

Right now Beal's TS% of 48.1% is the same as Barnes and better than Waiters 45.5%. It isn't exactly unusual to see guys struggle from the perimeter early in the rookie seasons.

The issue is how can you feel good about a guy that you labeled almost purely as a guy that can stretch the floor and hit shots when dude didn't have a history of that in college and doesn't have a history of it in the NBA right now.

I don't think his numbers are as bad as they seem, but I'm not sure we didn't just draft Randy Foye either.

First of all anyone who has watched the games knows that there is a lot more to Beal's game than stretching the floor. He does everything else well. The only notable problem area has been long range shooting.

Secondly comparing Foye to Beal you have to go to Foye's junior year in college to get comparable shooting numbers to Beals freshman season.

Lastly we are still talking about a small sample size of a teenager's games early in his rookie season.

I certainly understand the concern people have about Beal's shooting, especially given the hype about him being the next Ray Allen. The biggest problem is that the rook is being asked to play too many minutes and to carry too big of a load. That has to be a little overwhelming for a 19 year old.

Beal's shooting and aggressiveness will improve...just as they did in the latter part of his one-year of college ball. Right now,I'm enjoying his impressive all-around game. And his positive attitude and body language despite the team's terrible play and what has to be a frustrating start to his NBA career.

There are only two players drafted after Beal that I'd take over him---Drummond and Lilliard. Like many of you, I questioned Drummond's maturity and passion for the game, and Lilliard plays the same position as the Zards best player.

I think the 3p% will rise solely by virtue of his FT shooting. It's at a darn good 84% right now, which is better than his collegiate 77% suggested. The problem now is working in the muscle memory of shooting from the NBA 3, and getting over a mental block of sorts.

As with many other things, I think this will get better once Wall is back.
