Re: Ray Allen is really bad on defense
I think most people knew this but brushed it off because of his shooting. Honestly, replace him with Miller and it's the same thing, that ending line up (the fab 5 line up). Same effects.
It's just... it depends on how Ray is paired with. If it's another bad defender (RIO AGAINST FAST PG'S), and we have to defend the paint, that's where we are in trouble. Ray gets blown by, who doesn't? He isn't here for defense.
One thing though that annoys me as of now, I mean I remember Ray getting through so easily (well, he made it look easy), and getting into his sweet spots against us. I don't know if it's because we haven't set up any real plays for him or something. But they need to set him up more somehow. Use some of Boston's old plays if you have to.

Re: Ray Allen is really bad on defense
It is something we knew and honestly I don't think it is a big deal as long as Wade is geting major minutes. Yeah in crunch time when we are up I'd rather have a guy like Battier out there but Ray does give us a great offensive spark

Re: Ray Allen is really bad on defense
Let's look at the numbers with Ray on the court vs without Ray on the court.
Miami's Off Rtg:
With Ray: 107.2
Without Ray: 112.5
A 5.3 point swing against ray
To put this in perspective, an ORtg of 112.5 would be good for the #1 offense in the league. We are currently 2nd with a 109.8 rating (behind OKC's 110.1)
Miami's Def Rtg:
With Ray: 106.9
Without Ray: 97.0
A 9.9 point swing against ray
To put this in perspective, a DRtg of 97.0 would be good for the third best defense in the league. We are currently 14th with a 102.0 rating. A 106.9 DRtg is good for the third worst defense in the league.
I really wasn't expecting this, but we perform better on offense and incredibly better on defense without Ray on the court. We didn't sign him to be a defensive stopper but we didn't sign him to be a better shooting Mike Bibby either. Ray needs to become passable at defense. If he continues to be atrocious, he cannot be counted on in championship situations in close games where every possession matters.

Just for comparison,
Shane Battier:
ORTG With: 109.6
ORTG Without: 109.9
DRTG With: 97.9
DRTG Without: 105.7
Miami's Off Rtg:
With Ray: 107.2
Without Ray: 112.5
A 5.3 point swing against ray
To put this in perspective, an ORtg of 112.5 would be good for the #1 offense in the league. We are currently 2nd with a 109.8 rating (behind OKC's 110.1)
Miami's Def Rtg:

Without Ray: 97.0
A 9.9 point swing against ray
To put this in perspective, a DRtg of 97.0 would be good for the third best defense in the league. We are currently 14th with a 102.0 rating. A 106.9 DRtg is good for the third worst defense in the league.

Good compilation narmer. Didn't really want to go down that road myself with it's ugliness as the reason.

Our perimeter defense is throwing everything else off, so it's nice to have good backups for nights like last night when Wade was out. Unfortunately, Cole and Harris are our only defensive-minded backup wings, and only one of those guys can shoot and handle the ball reliably. Hence, Harris doesn't even sniff the court. I actually wanted to keep Temple over Harris, but I can't really complain about the last spot on the roster. Neither of them are gonna factor big into important games, so it's whatever. PEACE.
Cole shoots reliably bad. 38% on the season, 28% from 3. Awful.

i dont really care that Ray is bad on defense, he doesn't really get lit up. I care that chalmers is bad on both ends almost every single night except if we play OKC apparently.

The offensive part isn't entirely conclusive because he doesn't play with the starting lineup (who are going to have a high ORTG, especially if we are going small ball). When you back up a better player its hard to not have negative impact.
The defense is legit though. Last year Boston got much better on D when Bradley replaced Ray.

You think a guy that talks to Pat Riley every single day of his life won't see what works and doesn't?
Come on man. Miami is built for the playoffs, and regular season is to experiment different matchups. Spo was doing this all the way until the playoffs last year and everyone was questioning how unstable his rotations were.
I'm not concerned until Miami drops 3 games in a series in the playoffs.
He was also doing all that "experimenting" the year before but we still had Mike Bibby starting in the Finals. So because of that we can't be entirely confident that he will find the optimum rotations by the playoffs.

To pickup on my OP. I do have a lot of respect for what Ray has done in his career but he just looks done. He was brought he to make threes...doesn t make them anymore (he did in the beginning of the season)...he was brought to play acceptable/solid defense...he plays utterly garbage defense.he was brought here to help the team...doesn t help the team

It's also very important for a coach to show confidence in his players. Yea, it might get the team a few losses in the short term but in the long run it's a winning formula for the reason that everyone feels important and therefor buys in to whatever it is that needs to be done. Sometimes you have to lose now to win later. If e. g. Allen or Haslem are net-negatives in every possible 5-man-unit-combination at the end of the RS they won't see meaningful minutes when the scoreboard determines the team's success in the PS.
The team is clearly still in an evaluation period and everything is on the table when it comes to the player rotation. The offense looks crisp and they seem committed to showcase as little as possible from the playbook. It's all about the post-season.
Wow. Someone who actually understands what is going on.

I think he has looked great. He is the fourth scorer we've been missing.

2 years ago when we had no bench. He wasn't experimenting so much as desperately searching for something.
Bibby starting has all the signs of a pre-signing agreement. That or Spo started him to keep him from working with the second unit, because his defense is so bad. We only had 2 PGs, so at some point, yes, Bibby would have to grace...or rather, disgrace the court. It's easier to hide him with our best defenders than put him with the poor defenders on the 2nd unit. In the end it didn't matter anyway, since Rio closed.
I think it's pretty telling that that year Spo benched Z for good. He was an even worse defender than Bibby. I honestly think the only reason Bibby ever even stepped on the court is because we had no other option. Rio couldn't play 48 minutes. There weren't enough fouls to let him last that long. PEACE.

honestly, i think that's the only great move he made with this team.
The scary part is - i dont think he wouldv'e done that if Bosh didnt go down with an injury. I dont think he planed the all small ball thing, we got lucky it fell in his lap at the exact right time against the exact right team.
