Hypothetical Coach

Post#1 » by retrolenny » Mon Dec 31, 2012 3:57 pm

If you could choose any coach to coach the Pistons, who would it be?? There are obviously many good coaches but there are really only 3 that I could think of that could make us successful year after year.

1) Phil Jackson
2) Greg Popovich
3) Jerry Sloan

I know that Phil Jackson has all the star power but all of his teams were filled with amazing players. He's still a great coach and I would totally take him over Frank but not over Pop.

Popovich is probably the best defensive coach ever. He has an old Tim Duncan and has managed to keep his team amongst the elite in this league for over a decade. I LOVE that coach and feel like SA will always compete with him at the helm. If SA had any other coach they would be a very average team at best.

Sloan was MR 50 win. His teams almost always won 50 games a year. They didn't always have the best talent but he was always capable of making them compete day in and day out but was never able to take them to the promised land. I think Jackson would have had a similar result and Pop would have won them a title or 3!!

If you'd like to add a coach or more to the list, I'd love to hear your thoughts and why??

hypothetically I wish LB was about 10 years younger and we could bring him back.

id still love to have them but Phil and Jerry are a little to old for our team.

Thibodeau is the guy id go with, I prefer a defensive minded coach and hes young enough that he could coach the team for the next 10+ years. and the way hes held down the fort in Chicago while Rose has been out shows that he knows how to motivate his guys and work with what he has.

Popovich. I take him over Jerry because he has no hardware to show for it...and over Phil, because he had some of the most talented players EVER in Pip, MJ, Kobe, and Shaq. Pop did have Tony/Manu but I think Duncan is the only player comparable to the guys Phil had. Even after people thought the spurs were done, he continues to get them playing well. He makes guys like Danny Green who were bench warmers not knowing if they will get a next contract, to a good role player.

He gets the best out of every player. He's a good motivator, defensive minded and he's also a GREAT coach in terms of rotations, in-game strategies and play calling/rotations.

I think he's out of the question though. He will likely coach the Spurs until retirement. If we are looking at some younger coaches, I agree with Joseph mamah. Thibodeau would be terrific. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of Pop. He has his faults though...he tends to overplay players even when the game is over, which can come back to bite you later on.

That's exactly why I said hypothetical.. The only possibility of the names I listed above would be Sloan and even he is not a possibility. As for Thibodeau, I think he has a pretty damned good roster. He's a good coach but not sure if I'd list him. If I did then I'd have to add the coach that looks like a fat furniture salesman to the list. You know, the one with the mustache?? Stanley Van Gundy
