This issue is bigger than the Rockets. The NBA needs to be directly involved if they aren't already, because however this situation turns out will set a precedent for every team in the NBA. I can't wait for this drama to be over.

An anecdote that hopefully pertains to this:
There is this book about how Hollywood treats their script writers, I think it's called "Monster: Living off the big screen".
There is a point in this book where the script writer team, which happened to be the author of the book and his wife having a business lunch with a producer and his cronies. The author was insistent upon a story point in the script that would make a very different movie if it wasn't included. The producer and his team balked at it. The back and forth continued until the producer stops the conversation abruptly and says:
"I'm sorry, I can't be nice anymore. I'm going to have to show you my monster."
He reaches under the dinner table, and mimes bringing out a cage. He then mimes reaching into the cage, for dramatic effect, takes out the imaginary monster, and presents it to the writer team. Miming a movement to place the invisible monster onto the dining table, he then says to the screenwriter:
"The Monster, Is My Money."
The film was originally to be about Jessica Savitch, and the film in question became a very different film called "Up close and personal".
In the end, the one with the monster is the one who bears the risk, and in America, the monster always gets its way.

This is a link to a downloadable paper by Michael McCann of the Vermont Law School which exhaustively covers all possible legal ramifications for the Rockets, White and the NBA. It is a lengthy read, but very informative. It covers quite a bit of history of the events of this situation, many of which I was not previously aware.
