Dumars says he's saving all salary for offseason

Post#1 » by retrolenny » Fri Jan 4, 2013 2:12 am

Based on this I thought I'd throw out a few names for good measure.. Any thoughts, additions, or subtractions? Personally, I think if you can get the player you want in a trade then you make the freaking deal!!

1) Andre Igoudala
2) Chris Kaman (Dumars wants him. He's be great off the bench)
3) OJ Mayo
4) Jarrett Jack
5) David West
6) Chauncey Billups (Just hoping)
7) Monta Ellis
8) Andrei Kirlenko (Just fits the mold even though old)
9) Al-Farouq Aminu
10) JJ Redick
11) Mo Williams (Another Dumars crush)
12) Paul Millsap

Given the need at SF and our previous interest in trading for him, Josh Smith should be near the top of any free agency list.

Mayo would be terrific. Not likely though, I think he's happy in Dallas. They see him as one of their focal points and he's playing well. Our main needs are the SG spot, a future SF after Tayshaun retires, and a backup PG. A third bigman would be nice too. I guess we'll see who we end up with in the draft and work from there.

Yeah I was surprised by this too. Dumars must really be targeting certain players in FA. Personally, I'm really starting to love the idea of adding Mayo. His game is just perfect for what we need. I wouldn't mind throwing 12+mil at him either. I think all of our expiring players should be let go and CV should be amnestied too. Adding another guy like Milsap would give us two great bench players with Stuckey and Milsap. Dumars could then find a cheap pass first PG and a cheap backup C to play 10 or so minutes per game if need be. There are some nice names on that list so I hope Dumars is aggressive with his recruiting. My pipe dream:

Knight/Stuckey/Jack
Mayo/Stuckey
Prince/Singler
Monroe/Milsap
Drummond/Dalembert

We need a SG far more than we need a SF and Josh Smith is not a SF.

I'm not sure if Iguodala is the right guy to go after with a big contract. He's going to want big money and a long contract as its going to be his last big pay day. He didn't say he'll be using the cap for solely Free Agency in the summer so I'm hoping he's planning on swinging a major trade to bring in a 2 way swingman.

He specifically stated that he is looking to maintain the financial flexibility going into the offseason. That leaves a trade of players like Prince, Stuck, or CV!!

Yeah, I know what Joe said, but I don't believe a thing that comes out of a GM's mouth leading up to the trading deadline. If the right deal comes along just watch. I think he's just saying don't expect to fleece me, I'm not desperate.

I hope you're right.. Would LOVE to see a trade that actually improves our team, defense, & chemistry

according to that article or a article i read regarding this, Joe D is saving the cap room to help facilitate a trade as teams are looking to get under the cap. IE. it doesn't necessarily have to be a Free Agent. What teams over the cap would be looking to dump salary?

Well, I would certainly love to land a really good player with our cap space via trade, but I'd be surprised if anyone who isn't being overpaid would be available.

At least we know he's not putting all of his eggs into the free agency basket, though.

I hope he doesn't go and sell the house for Ellis. I'm OK with Iggy or Mayo even if we overpay a bit.

Chicago- Looking to trade Rip, Boozer is a likely amnesty candidate. A trade with the Bulls is very unlikely.
Memphis- Afraid of the future luxury tax, amnestying Zbo is more likely than trading Gay
LA Lakers- I'm sure they like to dump some salary.
Miami (maybe)
Minnisota- Kevin Love has showed some unhappiness with the teams results, so a trade demand could be around the corner if the team doesn't improve.

Theres going to be a lot of teams with cap space though. At this point I don't think Dumars knows what the plan is for the offseason, aside from having the cap space.

I don't this means Dumars isn't looking to do a trade at the deadline, it means he isn't into doing a trade that will add significant salary to the team.

The problem is that this place isn't exactly a free agent destination.

The 2nd problem is that as many as a dozen teams will have 10 mil in cap space.

This comment always gets me. Name me the last 5 instances other than the anomaly that is the Miami Heat where top tier, hell even B level free agents went to these mystical FA destinations and wasn't overpaid just as they would be having to "settle" for a small market. Did you not see this year's free agent crop? These are all Ben Gordon/Charlie V circa 2009 type free agents and we had no problem making this their destination.

I agree. Joe's not dumb. He rarely ever speaks to the media, so when he does there's most likely a lot of thought put into it and a motive behind it. I'm sure he wasn't really concerned about letting the fans know his plans, as he never lets us know anything. More likely what you said. He's just putting the word out there that he's not looking to take on anyone's bad contracts in exchange for his EXP.

I'm sure he's gotten a lot of calls from teams trying to dump their garbage on him. He's probably just letting everyone know he's not interested.

Yet again, we have capspace in a very mediocre environment. Joe would have to overpay in free agency. Please make some trades.

There is some great trade possibilities. Taking on salary w/out giving any back while combining a draft pick could net something significant. Could see something like that making sense for Memphis to trade Gay if they like any of the young guys in the draft. While its true u can't trade draft picks two seasons in a row, its possible to draft for another team and make the trade official later...so keep that in mind.

please be looking for rudy gay! im really hoping for either a 2 to start that allows stuckey to play the guards off the bench, as well as having a very good contributer in the starting lineup(mayo would be perfect) or a 3 like rudy gay that does a bit of everything and can be a go to guy in needed situations. cap space is always exciting times. hopefully it doesnt screw up again like cv and bg.
the ray of hope i get out of that, is that after joe messed up in the draft with darko, he hasnt made much of an error since (guess you could say daye over holiday and others wasnt great) this leads me to think hes going to do the same thing and pick the right guys this time, but we'll wait and see.
