Awesome question and because I have an extremely eclectic taste in music it's very hard to answer.

So here is what I thought I could do. Either:

A - Give the first song at the top of each alphabatical entry of songs on my ipod (a-z)
or
B - Give the first artist at the top of each alphabatical entry of songs on my ipod (a-z)

Thought that might give a global feel - even though is potentially misses out on some gems.

What do you think? Songs or artists?

slam, when you are in the mood for some 70s, funky smooth soul with a badass horn line, nasty bass and filthy drums check out some tower of power.

Squib Cakes - Tower of Power - instrumental that shows off the chops of this largely unknown band from 70s

By Your Side - Tower of Power - silky smooth r&b

Only So Much Oil - Tower of Power - funkiness with a message, drummer and bass so nasty

of course i cant post in this thread w/out promoting the greatest studio band in the history of music - steely dan - music for music snobs. catchy melodies, interesting lyrics, infectious hooks, blistering solos played by the best studio musicians of the 70s recorded by the brains of donald fagen and walter becker who had music OCD to the point that they made sure every note was perfect. soloist often had to play solos 100s of times before they would find a version they liked. often making several musicians try out for a particular solo. layers upon layers of tracks in the 70s when that was often unheard of, spending years recording albums and refusing to play live after 1974 because the live music wasnt perfect.

so if you havent already, do yourself a favor and go dowload the following albums. if you dont like them, then you are either deaf or don't deserve to listen to them because you dont know good music. haha. my 6 favorite albums of all-time, below, all by the same band.
- aja
- royal scam
- katy lied
- countdown to ecstasy
- pretzel logic
- cant buy a thrill

Peg - Steely Dan - perfection, light years ahead of their time in the studio, music recorded today still doesnt sound this crisp and clear and this is the **** decompressed youtube version, michael mcdonald on backup vocals, guitar solo by larry carlton at 1:46.

Kid Charlemagne - Steely Dan - gotta love songs about drug dealers, larry carlton solo at 2:22 and again at 3:56 "is there gas in the car? yes there's gas in the car, i think the people down the hall know who we are" brilliant.

Don't Take Me Alive - Steely Dan - the solo at the start just sets the tone, songs about guys on the run from the police = win. who else can get away with the line "with rage in your eyes and your megaphones" in a song?

Home At Last - Steely Dan - the sickest groove ever. thats jazz drum legend bernard purdie on drums and chuck rainey on bass making that filthy groove.

Your Gold Teeth 2 - Steely Dan - and now perhaps my favorite guitar solo of all-time, by denny dias at 2:19, just perfect, played over a smooth 6/4 time signature.

enjoy

random story time... how fat started posting on realgm

speaking of steely dan, one could argue that steely dan is the reason i started posted on realgm. back in fall/winter of 2000, before realgm was created there was a website called sportstalk. sportstalk was the original hoopshype, a site that featured NBA rumors and comment sections under each day's rumors. there was a writer, kelly dwyer, who wrote for sportstalk. dwyer was a huge steely dan fan and used to make a ton of steely dan references in his articles. i started posting on sportstalk to comment to dwyer about steely dan, since i figured i was one of about 5 people who read his articles who probably appreciated the steely references.

sportstalk ended in early 2001 and merged with a canadian basketball fan site to create............ realgm (or something like that). i followed many of the sportstalk posters over to realgm where i lurked for a few months before finally joining in june of 2001 to respond to some idiot poster named "daleellis" who was trashing the hornets, hence my user name "fatlever" all lowercase no space between names.

kelly dwyer of course later went on to create ball dont lie. if you follow his twitter you will notice he talks about 70s music all the time and still proclaims steely dan has his favorite band of all-time.

this is great news for the universe, we've needed this for the last 30 years. fans in charlotte will understand more than most, with their inability to view local games without having certain cable companies

apparently the deal Intel was working on is falling apart. Its not as if the cable companies didnt have the technology to do this before it was just not worth it to the content creators. the cable companies spend a TON of money to make sure you have ESPN in your line up, IF people start picking and choose what channels they dont want it devalues the ESPN as a whole. you have going to have a hell of a time convincing the content creators that this is a good idea for them.

the way you convince them is by offering them money. if they don't take it, you don't offer their shows and they don't get any money. the reason cable companies don't offer this is because they wouldn't make as much money, but right now intel isn't making money on cable.

at any rate, even the empty threat is good because it will gauge public interest in such a system.
