The poster commented on how corporate welfare is stupid. You then stated that unfettered capitalism is killing us.

Which, again, leads me to believe you don't really understand what capitalism is.

Then why were the Wall Street so-called "too big to fail" banks bailed out with tax payer dollars? Why were Wall Street banking executives not prosecuted for their widespread mortgage fraud and crashing the economy? Why were these same executives permitted to walk away with bonuses, after being bailed out and crashing the economy? Why does the fossil fuel industry receive billions in subsidies aka corporate welfare? Why did Obama just agree to a deal with Congressional Republicans that gives billions in corporate tax breaks? Why do corporations and banks continue to receive both subsidies and tax breaks? Why did HSBC merely receive a slap on the wrist after being found guilty of laundering money for drug cartels and doing business with clients with ties to terrorism? Why has there yet to be significant financial reform and the restoration of regulations in the banking sector? Why has there been decades of rampant financial and environmental deregulation?

This isn't because of a need or desire for social justice.

Capitalism is a rather broad economic category. There are many sorts of capitalism, from laissez-faire to state capitalism.

I do feel that public funding of stadiums & ballparks has its place in our marketplace. Professional sports teams bring huge money to the city, and generally a good chunk the funding, at least IMO is brought upon by a small sales tax bump, a bed tax, funding bonds, etc. Even Soldier Field, a very expensive renovation surely brought, and continues to bring in, a tremendous amount of revenue to the city, county and surrounding area's.

I'm sure many people tailgate vs hitting the local eateries, but a hell of a lot still grab a bite, or a drink on the way in or out, and thousands still buy all the tailgating supplies, and spend tons of money on all the ancillaries, fuel, propane, brats, burgers, tolls, we go to the mall and buy bears merchandise, people fly in, rent hotels and cars, see the sights, visit the shore,, they also drive in from all area's just to see a game. The last game I saw was a 3 day weekend for me, and I spent $600 in Illinois instead of staying home spending $100 in Florida.

I'm not bored enough to start number crunching, but i'd be willing to guess that there are numerous studies showing the positive economic impact of probably a minimum of 75% of all sports stadium funding deals.
