My best idea on this forum

Dumars has made it clear he's not going to take on salary before the offseason. I find it hard to believe that Maggette would not be available to make a trade for Gay, but assuming that Joe is being honest, why not buy out Maggette? He would definitely accept a lower amount owed if he wants to continue playing. I highly doubt that Maggette would like to go out this way. By buying out Maggette, we would actually save a little, give Cory the ability to sign elsewhere and let Ben Wallace finish the rest of the season with us. I would have to assume that the trade deadline is a pretty key date for us!!

This kind of moves happen after the trade dead line, not prior to it. If Maggette is out of the rotation and not traded by the trade dead line yeah he will be bought out 100% for sure.

I specifically said that.. Maggette remains a Piston until the trade deadline. There is no reason to buy him out until we know for certain that we are not taking on talent in return!!

I'm not sure why Maggette would even want a buyout. If he couldn't help CHA/DET win games, I doubt any contenders will be interested in him. So he would just be giving up money to go sit at home probably.

I am not so sure he will be bought out. In the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams must spend at least 85% of the salary cap or be fined an amount equal to the difference. I am not sure if we buy him out if we meet that part of the CBA. So we might not be able to do it to save money, if not, there is no point.

I don't think it will be draft pick...Dumars will make something happen this trade deadline and Spaghetti's expiring contract will have something to do with it, just watch...

Plus, teams usually only agree to do buyouts if the player is willing to give up some of the money owed to them and take less to be bought out. And usually its the player that wants out to go to a contender. In Maggettes case, I don't think any contenders even want him. Plus, he doesn't seem like someone who even cares about winning. My guess is he would rather just stay here on the bench and get his total contracts worth, being what could be his last contract

Of course we'd meet the minimum salary cap requirement... we're over the cap!

Assuming we only pay Maggette $5 mil this season instead of the $10 mil he was supposed to get we'd still be over the minimum requirement

As for contenders not wanting Maggette - he might be a ball hog but some second units could certainly use him. He's a slasher and can get to the line... any time you can get the other team in foul trouble is a good time!

I'm not if any contenders have wiggle room under the luxury tax threshold to sign Maggette to anything but the minimum... and if that's the case he'd want more than half his $10 mil from us.

It would come down to:

1) Can we package him for something worthwhile prior to the trade dealine?
2) Assuming the answer to #1 is "No" would any contender sign him to more than the minimum?
3) Assuming the answer to #2 is "No" would Maggette take less than $7 mil to walk away?

If a contender would be willing to sign Maggette for the minimum he could basically name his price. Either he takes his buyout and the minimum... or he takes $10 mil!

I'm guessing he'd take whichever option got him the most money

I'm assuming that Maggette would take a buyout for $1.5mm less than what he is fully owed. He might believe it would get him signed to a contender, extend his career, or get him at least the min next year. Furthermore, the $1.5mm would be enough to use to sign Ben.

You could waive Middleton now and sign Ben Wallace to the veteran minimum - which for Big Ben is over $1 mil

Buying out Maggette doesn't allow you to give Big Ben $1.5 mil

We're over the cap! You can't just save $1.5 mil on Maggette and then give that cash to Ben - it doesn't work that way

Once you're over the cap you can only use exceptions (MLE, what used to be the LLE but is now the Bi-Annual Exception). IF you've used both exceptions then you can only sign players to the minimum!
