2013 Ask Jeff Risdon a Question

Post#1 » by Icness » Tue Jan 8, 2013 1:56 pm

Since we're starting to clutter up last year's edition...
I have one rule here:
Don't call anyone out for ignorance. I'll try to follow that myself. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember that not everyone watches 4-6 games a day as a job 8-)

Does a game like T'eo had last night appreciably effect his draft stock?

Barr is going back to UCLA. Skov staying at Stanford. Gholston probably staying at MSU. I think I saw Mosley going back to Bama but that was awhile ago.

If your'e going evaluation tiers, I would make some changes, Lewan isn't that good. Eifert goes up a tier. Short is too high. Richardson is above Star because he makes more splash plays. I wouldn't have S. Williams anywhere here. Nor Swope. Kyle Long belongs higher.

Travis Kelce belongs over Fauria, so does Gavin Escobar at TE.

If you're going where they will be drafted tiers, Jordan is a top 10 pick even with his torn labrum.

I had him slotted in the 12-20 range before last night. Now his ceiling is probably 18-20, won't fall out of 1st round. As I said over the weekend, Kevin Minter will go above him

Whats so special about DeMontre Moore? I've watched him several times and maybe its just me but I don't see it at all.

Hmm, missed that and was given bad info from someone who should know better. Thanks!

Excellent at getting off blocks. Above average closing burst on QB. Able to make plays in space at a rare capacity for a down lineman. Very good at dropping in coverage on zone blitzes and at blowing up screens.

What I really like is that he got visibly better over the course of the season. Everyone knew he could rush the passer but he improved his leverage, his play recognition.

Geno Smith declined an invite to the Senior Bowl. Is this going to help, or hurt his stock?

I know he's still ranked #1 on a lot of people's QB lists, but is he doing this to avoid a bad showing, or is he doing this to work on something mechanical/mental/etc.?

He had nothing to gain by going, in terms of draft stock. If anything this signifies he has been convinced he is going #1 overall. Otherwise his agent would have him out there to earn it.

He's my #1 QB but I have him in the 12-15 overall range on the Big Board. I like him but there is pretty significant bust risk there.

Couple Geno Smith questions:

What do you think are the odds he goes #1? If not him, is it a lock that the Chiefs take Joeckel or could it be someone else?

If he doesn't go #1, what's his floor?

With Andy Reid as the Chiefs coach, I think it's about 85% Geno goes #1. If it's not Geno I could see Joeckel, Tyler Wilson, or maybe Bjoern Werner. If Dion Jordan wasn't hurt he might have had a shot. Not that I agree with that, but I seldom agree with the top pick.

Wilson was off his game this year as the Arkansas program collapsed around him.

When his game is on, tongues hang out and panties drop.

Jeff -

Whats your opinion on Eifert and Ertz? How do they compare to top TE prospects of years past?

They are 1 and 1a to me, Eifert just a little more polished. Both are legit top 40 prospects. Both are better prospects than Kyle Rudolph. Love how Notre Dame used Eifert as the Z receiver often, taught him how to run deep routes and deal with speedy coverage. The upside of Graham and Gronk isn't quite there, but both these guys can easily catch 75+ passes for 900+ yards by 2014 and do it every year.

Like bucksfan said, he is unfairly stigmatized by being part of the trainwreck that was Arkansas. Has every bit the arm talent of Stafford or Cutler, has already been thru NFL-caliber drama and adversity & came out the other side smarter and mentally tougher for it. He's a top 10 pick, I'll guarantee that.

My hope, as a Bears fan, is that if the OL/LB go early that Phil grabs one of these guys at 20. We desperately need a TE that can catch.

Saw a tidbit today that the Bears targeted TEs an NFL-low 12% of their passes. Lions and Patriots were at 28% to lead the league. Bears aren't even at 50% of the leaders in a league where everyone is moving towards at least 25% targets to TE.

To be a little fair, they had to keep TE in to help in pass protect a lot.
