2013 draft pick..Trade or Keep?

Post#641 » by BobsBuddy » Wed Jan 16, 2013 3:58 pm

:o :o :-? :-? 2013 1st round pick. Trade or Keep? What's yours????????????

My thoughts are to trade

Bobcats should have top 5 pick in this years draft. Scouts have indicated this years draft is very week compared to 2014 when some franchise studs will be available. 2013 top 5 include Muhammad,Noel,Zellar,
Len and Bennet. Big shooting guards like Mclemore and Williams could be available with Portlands pick at 12.
We can stand our ground and pick of these taking a chance that we lose 2014 to Chicago or we could consider
trading Hendo and our 2013 unprotected pick to Chicago for removal of the TT trade restriction and trade checker 6206149 Bellinelli/Radmonavic expirings and Chicagos 2013 pick. We let both walk along with Rwill and Diop and continue to rebuild by replacing with our two picks at 12 and 22?(Chicago's) in 2013 and we have our 2014 or 2015 pick back from Chicago.
Also we are well under the cap after this season.

I've came to the realization that nobody is going to trade for Hendo about 2-3 weeks ago. Our best bet is to just let him come off the bench in the role that we'd expect for him in the future and sign him to the cheapest contract possible, the qualifying offer for one more year to see if we want to keep him around when we actually start trying to win. Any further contractual agreements with him might put us in a long term bond that we might regret because I can also see Hendo falling to the waist side like Reggie Williams did in our rotations when winning becomes a focus.

Keep. The best player that we could get from trading our pick is probably Rudy Gay which I wouldn't mind but he isn't really worth it and I'm sure we could get him without trading our 2013 pick by using expirings and the Portland pick. There's absolutely no reason to trade our 2013 draft pick. It's a totally ludicrous suggestion by scouts that wasn't well thought out.

Keep the pick. I'm with catch20two in this question. No need for 2.-3. best players in a contender team (for example Gay), we will hopefully have them in MKG and Kemba in a few years time. We need a franchise player, and the most likely way to get one is via draft.

I may have said this before, but i think Charlottes best bet is to absorb contracts to add draft picks. I don't think going after a Rudy Gay is a good fit.

If we can get JJ Hickson for a reasonable price, I would do that.

I don't think Rudy Gay is the answer but I believe that his scoring prowess would almost instantly make us competitive in the East. He's young enough to be a part of the future but he's also about 2-3 years away from expiring, around the same time the youth of the Bobcats will be peaking into their primes.

I would love the addition of J.J. Hickson as well compared to our frontcourt depth but I don't see him as being anything more than a stop-gap at PF/C the same way the Blazers are using him temporarily until they find someone more substantial. Hickson would only make sense as a long term option if you have a all-star caliber 7 foot tall center playing alongside him.

We should package our pick with other pieces and go after a legit star talent. Demarcus Cousins is my first choice. I really think we have pieces that Sacramento would want, in those picks, a stretch big in Mullens, a real point guard in Sessions, hell, they can even take Taylor and Henderson if they want. DMC is a star in this league as long as he keeps his head in the game.

Rudy Gay, as I've said before, isn't much more than a glorified role player, who can step in and score 20ppg, but won't give you much else. He won't hurt you in any way, but even his strong suit, scoring, alone is definitely nowhere near worth his contract. I'd rather take Marcus Thornton before Gay. If the Kings decide to go with the rebuild, we could get Thornton for the Portland pick, for Henderson, or while taking back a bad contract for expirings. While his all-around game is kind of deficient, he could probably score 20ppg for us for $10M less per year than Rudy Gay.

If we do trade our pick, it better either be for a star, or a guaranteed nice pick in 2014. We already likely have 3 1st round picks in or close to the lottery in that draft. If we can go to a team like Orlando, and say, "Hey take our 2013 pick and give us your 2014 pick, there's a good chance that Orlando pick could be in the low to middle part of the lottery, potentially giving us FOUR lottery picks. I'm all for putting all our eggs into one basket and holding out for trading all or most of those picks up for star talent, whether it's through the draft or an already established young star. There are no franchise players in the 2013 draft. There are no can't-miss prospects here. We're better off looking at one more bad season and trying our luck at Wiggins, Randle, Parker and whoever else turns head next year, all of whom are decidedly better than anybody else getting drafted in 2013.

tl;dr:
-I want DMC.
-Say no to Rudy Gay, instead take a look at Marcus Thornton or similar players.
-Trade our 2013 pick in a package for a young star or trade for a nice 2014 pick.
-Put all our eggs into the 2014 Draft basket.

Cho says trade for need, draft for talent. Our glaring need is at the 4 & 5. I hope we can find the right player available to trade for this season at one of those spots, giving up our pick and a player as necessary. This draft has very marginal players, no stars. We need an impact player now and into the future. I like Jason Thompson, and would gladly deal them a player & a '13 pick if he is part of the package. We still need a quality shooting guard who can become our go-to scorer, but that's likely someone to find with one of our picks.

But the tank...what about the tank? The tank is no guarantee of championships, nor even competing for the playoffs. The Wizards have been tanking forever, lots of other teams too (maybe not always intentionally), and look where it's gotten them. At some point fans get tired of hoping for luck to land them a superstar. I say build the best team from what you can, when you can, and make great draft picks.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

The Sacramento/Seattle Kings/Supersonics are not trading their only potential marketable player. That boat has sailed. You can give up hope on that one.

CHA_77_Bobcats wrote:-Say no to Rudy Gay, instead take a look at Marcus Thornton or similar players.

Marcus Thornton is Ben Gordon with worst defense, a horrible team attitude, and a huge question mark as a #1 option.

CHA_77_Bobcats wrote:-Trade our 2013 pick in a package for a young star or trade for a nice 2014 pick.

You don't think other teams perceive the 2013 draft as a weak class and would be extremely reluctant to give up a proven young star for a questionable player out of the draft? We must control our homerism.

CHA_77_Bobcats wrote:-Put all our eggs into the 2014 Draft basket.

If we keep this current roster, all of our eggs will be hatched in the 2014 NBA Draft. There's no telling if those will be bad eggs though, resulting in yet another rebuild on top of a rebuild. By then, Kemba and MKG might be damaged goods from 5 demoralizing years of losing.

:-? :-? :( :( The worse thing we can do right now is get off track of what the MJ/Cho plan is to build this team through the draft. Cho has said he drafts the best possible player and trades for need. That said here is the facts:

The 2013 draft is going to be weaker than 2014 and possibly 2015. We have a much better chance of Losing Hendo to RFA next year and also losing our 1st round pick in either 2014 or 2015 because of the Thomas trade.

We need to draft a Franchise Stud and there is none in 2013 but there will be in 2014/2015. There are some more good roll players like Williams and Mclemore that will be drafted early teens and others in the twenties.

Chicago could use Hendo now and getting our 2013 unprotected pick helps them go deeper in playoffs this year and still add a quality bench player through the draft for next season.

We add 2 expiring contracts in trade plus 2 more role players in 2013 draft and continue to tank to get a low pick for 2014 and beyond.

This is a no brainer.

You might be my new favorite poster on here. Finally someone that makes sense and isn't demoralized by the losing culture of the LOLcats or brainwashed by Cho. I'm not too fond of this whole building through the draft recipe. I can't think of any other modern day team that became a contender building their team that way other than the Thunder but I can name several teams that wasted years in the lottery never becoming anything better than a treadmill.

And how exactly do you (Man Strength and Catch22) expect us to win a title?

Or are you okay with being the perennial 10-6 seed we were for the first half of the team's existence?

its easy to mock the front office and their moves or lack of, without suggesting plausible alternatives.

The majority of trade scenarios I see on here are completely unrealistic.

Cho keeps a tight ship so we don't hear much, but the I've heard the Bobcats mentioned enough with rumours to believe that Cho has been active.
Our name was mentioned preseason with most free agents, but no one wanted to sign here apart from Sessions.

We might be forced to rebuild by the draft at first as that's our only way to get talent. We are not going to be able to trade for talent unless we give some up. We can't afford to do that.

As MJ was quoted as saying "I also understand we’ve got to get our house in order, so that it becomes attractive to certain people. Right now we’re getting our house in order"

I don't think we have a choice but to be patient. It sucks.

If somebody had the answer to how to win a title then there wouldn't be any reason to play the games, now would it? But you can start by trying to put together a competitive team. There's no guarantee that this "draft, draft, tank, develop, wait-and-see approach" will make us any better than a perennial 10-6 seed either. We're not the only team in the league with young talent with more young talent to come. It can even be argued that our rebuild (Kemba/MKG/Biz) is currently behind the Wizards (John Wall/Bradley Beal/Jan Vesely), Cavaliers (Kyrie Irving/Dion Waiters/Tristan Thompson), and Pistons (Greg Monroe/Andre Drummond/Brandon Knight). That's not mentioning the superstars like LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Derrick Rose that will have their vice grip on the Eastern Conference probably for the next half a decade.

We tried that. It got us a top 5 payroll for a 7 seed that got swept in the first round.

There's no guarantee that this "draft, draft, tank, develop, wait-and-see approach" will make us any better than a perennial 10-6 seed either.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me a better "plan"

Hell, I would hope so. This is only the second year of our "rebuild", you know

That's not mentioning the superstars like LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Derrick Rose that will have their vice grip on the Eastern Conference probably for the next half a decade.

So our best bet is to get superstars or players who have the best chance of becoming superstars?

We aren't going to get any superstars because they're busy teaming up in big markets so that leaves the potential superstar guys. And the last time I checked, the best way to get those guys is to draft them.
