Chip Kelly waffles, agrees to coach Eagles

PHILADELPHIA -- The Eagles have hired Chip Kelly after he originally chose to stay at Oregon.

Kelly becomes the 21st coach in team history and replaces Andy Reid, who was fired Dec. 31 after a 4-12 season.

"Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles," owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team."

I honestly wasn't expecting him to flip-flop and take the job. I would imagine Philly gave him a massive deal to move up to the highest level.

I like the hiring. Offense should be humming under his regime. He loves speed and knows how to maximize talent. I could see DeSean, Maclin, and McCoy having monster seasons next year. I also think this probably means Vick will probably get another run with this team. Chip's always had a thing for fast qb's who can make plays with their legs.

Eagles are definitely headed in the right direction as long as they can get a good defensive coordinator now.

Wonder if this means they keep Vick.

He's an offensive guru and innovator but I don't know if his offense will work without the huge speed advantage that he had at Nike U. He's also not gonna have such a big talent differential. Even the best teams are only a little bit more talented than the worst teams in the NFL. He's also gonna have the worst QB in a division with three really good ones. His work is definitely cut out for him. This is a boom or bust hire.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

The system will work if he has the players around him, and the one thing that Philly did have was speed on offense. I bet they'll end up taking another QB in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Not sure how to feel. I wanted Gus Bradley. But I'm happy Lurie got the guy he wanted from the get go.

Please nooo. I've actually read somewhere recently that Chip loves him some Foles.

Chip loves Foles as a college player. Kelly is known for building effective schemes based on what he has at his disposal. Vick is 33 and looks toast. I don't think there's anything to read into this hiring as it pertains to Philly's QB situation.

I'm excited to see how the whole QB situation plays out across the league.

Chiefs-Eagles-Cardinals-Jaguars-Bills-Jets and to a lesser degree Seahawks-Vikings.

Eagles are in a prime position to draft Smith if they want to...
