However, a few NBA arenas are doing their best to expand the conception of acceptable game music. In Brooklyn, the Nets have gone with slightly outside of the mainstream rap, perhaps because of the general influence of part-owner and style councilor Jay-Z. But the real progress is being made at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, where the Grizzlies' in-game entertainment crew has embraced various types of music outside of the jock jam world. Andrew Unterberger spoke with the men responsible for The Basketball Jones:

Brooklyn has a DJ and JayZ screams crap throughout the game. I'm not a JayZ fan so I find it pretty annoying.

Re: Take a look inside the Memphis Grizzlies
Nice find. We've always had an eclectic mix of in-game music. My only critique is that it seemed to go YEARS without ever changing - for example, Led Zeppelin's "Song Remains The Same" is a great tune, but their catalogue has a ton of other songs that could be shuffled in as well.
This year, however, they have mixed in some new ones as far as I can tell - a few cuts from Deltron 3030 and even Dead Prez "Hip Hop" (which on a sidenote is hilarious to me because alot of the older white people in the arena would flip out if they knew the content of the whole song).
EDIT: They still have a long ways to go IMO. I mean, they were playing Usher "Yeah" every game like it was hot and new in 2010, and they still play the same 4th quarter music/cues to get the crowd going that they did 4 or 5 years ago - Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and the 1990s Bulls intro music (I'm still waiting for Jordan and Pippen to come walking out decked in Grizz gear with 5 minutes to go in the 4th). A guess we're moving in the right direction, just in baby steps IMO.
If you couldn't tell by now, I'm a season ticket holder for a few years now that has been subject to a nearly identical in-game presentation for awhile.

Dead Prez was tight when it first came out. And you're right. While it makes a good bump for fans to listen to, the lyrics can be something else. lol
