Dwight Howard Free Agency Discussion
The way we are struggling there is no way any team will look to help us out in a trade. So if we can't trade Gasol, Dwight is more likely to get us a good deal back. I don't want to trade Dwight but do you seriously think he will resign with this old team? So why not put Dwight on the trade block and get something back for him.

Dwight is dumb... But he'll still be the best big man in the league when healthy...
You don't trade him, you teach him and surround him with players that make up for the boneheaded plays he makes from time to time...
I think at this point you start by firing D'Antoni, then you trade Pau for what you can get and see how things go...

I didn't say Dwight sucks, I said if we want to make a significant trade Dwight can get us back a good deal. I would keep him to be honest but my point is why keep him, do you seriously think he will resign with this OLD TEAM?

How do you begin to teach someone who's already been in the league 8 years? Dwight is what you see. Nothing has changed in years.

you can't make a good deal for Dwight because there are only two teams he will resign with. Dallas has nothing to offer nor does Brooklyn that would make this a good deal.

Atlanta: Horford/fillers for Dwight
Chicago: Noah/Deng for Dwight/Peace
NY: Chandler/fillers for Dwight
Don't tell me these teams wouldn't wont the best center in the NBA.

Trading Dwight would be the dumbest move. Dwight is a player you build around, not trade. Gasol would be the first option on the trading block. With him alone this team can acquire the youth that it needs to stay competitive.

Unless the hypothetical is that Dwight won't resign with us, I still take him over those offers.

You really think thats all Dwight is worth? Good role players plus fillers? Dwight is the best player in an LA uniform and their future. Trading him would make things much worse.

The only thing in your future if it involves a Dwight trade is Brooks Lopez Kris Humphries Marshon Brooks and some first round picks.

Well I don't think anyone expects him to be the WHOLE future.
I think the expectations were too high if people thought we were getting the next Shaq. I've heard people call him the next Bill Russell, and that's maybe a little more appropriate. Not that he'll have the career Russell had, but he seems like he's more that type of player. But Russell was the consummate team player. I'm not so sure that's Dwight.
In any case, Dwight isn't going to dominate and carry a team like Shaq could... Maybe not even like Kareem could... We'll need to build around him.
We'll need to find the next elite playmaker after Kobe and a top notch facilitator. Then add some shooters and defenders. Just like any contender.

Re: It's more likely we trade Dwight?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would seriously consider trading Dwight and Pau if I'm Lakers FO.
While Dwight is the best big man in the league, he's a center that relies on his athleticism and is coming off major back surgery. He's horrible in the post and can't shoot free throws. Will we ever see the Dwight pre-surgery? I have no clue honestly. Considering all this, we also have to remember that Dwight is supposed to be our next franchise player. By the time Kobe retires, Dwight is going to be like 30. Considering he relies on his athleticism that may never fully come back, how many years of the "Dwight era" will we really have?
We could get alot of good value for him honestly. BK was willing to give us Brooks, Humpries, Lopez AND 3 first rounds picks. Not saying I would want that deal, but i'm sure Lakers FO can get something major for him.

I think going on the assumption that the FO HASN'T thought of trading everyone not named Kobe, is naive...

Just from putting the pieces together, Pau is a likely goner. Today you saw Gasol for what he is at C. A decent defender (rotated alright, not great), average rebounder, and a great scorer.
A Dallas, Memphis, L.A. deal where Gay ends up in L.A. isn't out of the question.

I would go crazy if we could get Gay for only Pau. But Memphis is not going to help us out.Jajwanda wrote:Just from putting the pieces together, Pau is a likely goner. Today you saw Gasol for what he is at C. A decent defender (rotated alright, not great), average rebounder, and a great scorer.

Look at it from their end. They want to improve, find lesser salary long-term, and find a more complimentary player. Them worrying about the current out of playoffs Lakers is silly. They're worried about themselves.

This in now way shape or form helps LA or Memphis. Gay has a bloated contract and where does he fit in LA with Metta? He's average in almost every aspect outside of finishing at the rim.
