Trade with Memphis Leuer, we hardly knew ya

Post#1 » by TheOUTLAW » Tue Jan 22, 2013 2:39 pm

The Grizzlies would send big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington and guard Josh Selby to the Cavs for big man Jon Leuer. There are also believed to be a future draft pick involved in the deal.

Reducing payroll both short- and long-term has been a goal of the new Grizzlies ownership and led to other trade talks involving Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph over the past several weeks.

Looks like the Cavs may have picked up another first rounder in 2015 (I'm pretty sure that'd be 3) this one top 5 protected.

Steve Kyler tweeted that the pick that the Cavs get is a 2015 first round selection with top 5 protection.

Confirming #Cavs trade with Grizzlies. Leuer goes to Grizz in exchance for Ellington, Selby & Speights. Cavs also get a future 1st rd pick.... According to Jason Lloyd.

Memphis looks desperate if that's true.

win win for sure

Memphis gets the keep the guys they want at the expense of a late 1st.
Cavaliers collect another pick and I think Spreights can play.

we just traded a 1st round and two 2nd round picks for a one poor 2nd round pick. our FO has shown they are truly the amateurs we suspected. CORRECTION: TWO 1st round picks... didnt' realize the 2015 is a 1st rounder... wow :o

Wow nice move to get another pick. What is the protection after 2015?

We got the three best players and a draft pick for the worst player.
Sweet.

Speights brings a low post game you guys don't have, and Ellington just shoots the 3'. I haven't seen much of Leuer to form an opinion, but that's a nice package to add with a first rounder ;) Good for Cavs, not so good for Memphis apart from tax money.

Schwing! Awesome deal for us. Ellington and Speights give us some quality depth, not sure Selby brings much to the table, but there's some potential there, plus a 1st? Good job. Plus, we still have expirings left at our disposal.

We got all of that for a guy who isn't even a part of our team, really. What an awesome trade. We gotta see if we're still in the hot zone and try and flip Casspi and Walton for Paul George or something

Cleveland stock piling draft picks is the sign of a blockbuster trade coming IMO. I mean, they own something like 10 firsts over the next three drafts . There is no way they plan on actually using all those picks.

I'm thinking Cleveland is going to make a run at Cousins with some of those picks.

Cousins I basically the antithesis of the types of players we target.

Love the trade. It opens up more possibilities going forward, and the pick will likely be a lottery pick once we receive it.

A shame we had to waive Pargo, I liked him..

Getting Speights will hopefully keep Luke on the bench going forward!

I was actually arguing with someone who's point was that this only gives us maybe one or two wins. How delusional... Heck, it probably would have given us significant wins already had it been done during the summer, but that's not even the point. This is a deal to improve our bench and give us assets.

This is better for Memphis than trading Gay or Randolph

Good deal for a guy we werent even using. Speights has shown flashes of being a good player but has been inconsistent, not unlike Hickson in that manner. I wouldnt be surprised if he is our starting C at some point this season over Zeller. If I recall wasnt Selby a pretty good defensive player in college?
I do like the way Grant has stockpiled picks, it does increase the teams ability to make a big move (hopefully) for an established player in the future.

LOL @ some of the general board posters... saying this is a lateral move for the Cavs, and saying we've given AWAY 10 1st round picks over the last few years. I fail to see how trading a guy we probably would have waived for 3 young players and a potential lotto pick is lateral, but what do I know  . We haven't had too much to be excited about the past few seasons, so I'm lovin this! Chris Grant is a damn genius. I fully trust him to do the right thing, whatever that may be depending on the circumstances, with AV.

Irving/Livingston/Selby
Ellington/Waiters/Selby
Gee/Miles/Casspi
Thompson/Speights/Walton
Zeller/Speights/Thompson

Add to that possibly 2 1st rounders this year, another 1st next year, and potentially room for 2 max deals in 2014? Lookin good!
