By the way, if anyone wants to watch the press conference with the announcement, there are a few NOLA news channels streaming it. You can hear Tom Benson ramble on in his finest New Orleans Yat accent, and there will possibly be alternate logos, and even possibly jerseys.

I can post a link if anyone is interested, Starts in half hour.

PANTS.

People really can't handle new things. Wow. First they make fun of the Nintendo "Wii" because of it's name, then the "iPad", yet all of a sudden they become household names.

What about the Red Sox. Naming a team after socks would be considered horrendous if it was a new idea.

Seriously, Lakers? That name would be considered dumb as hell if it was new. A team named after people who enjoy lakes? What's intimidating about that?

People really can't handle new ideas. I'm not saying every new idea is good, but I appreciate that New Orleans is actually thinking smart right now instead of thinking of a ferocious name to satisfy little 9 year olds who love T-Rex's and Vampires and Werewolves.

Did I advocate for ferocious names? There's nothing intimidating about lakers or knicks, are Pelicans intimidating? If Pelicans catches the eye and attention to NO then it did its job.

So sounds like you don't like Lakers or Knicks as names, why can't i not like pelicans?

This post:

2 questions that I have no idea whether they are rhetorical or not.

Then you agreed with the person you were arguing against.

Then you asked another adversarial question.

I'm so confused.

I don't have a problem with the lakers and Knicks. My point is that despite their silly names, they are still a household name. You know why? Because it grows onto people.

How far do you really have to look? If a team came out today and named their team Rockets, everyone would point and laugh. Pelicans are a pretty awesome bird, and also the state bird. Great logo and great symbolism. I'm sorry they're not the Tigersharks, but it's a solid name none the less.

Is that the general consent? I do not speak for the majority, just myself, but does the general public view the Pelican as a "awesome" bird or do they view it at the bottom of the pole?

The logo(leaked) is nice by design, colors and structure. But Pelicans... I couldn't.... could've gone with Tigers(cliche perhaps) or something else about Nola.

I think one of the reasons you go with a name like Pelicans vs something like Tigers or a more generic sports name is you don't wanna share a name with any team including one that's already in state for merchandising reasons more so when you consider how hard it is for NBA teams to turn a profit... Living in Louisiana myself I hated the name at first but understood the reasoning behind it mostly considering an NBA team has 41 home games so the name needed to apply state wide to fill the arena not just NOLA.

I think the name's fine, but I prefer cartoonish logos tbh. This one looks good but maybe too modern.

I really wanted the Gators or the Hurricanes. I know those are already taken by prominent college programs but how many Tiger, Lions, Bears names are there. It would have checked off the fitting to the area and the fierceness criteria.

thanks brah!

and as far as the argument goes, some people like ferocious names, others like unique names. neither is wrong, though i think the people that like ferocious names are kind of funny.

You find those worse than Pelicans? to each their own then...

Definitely. Throw in the Thunder as well.

How about the Bucks. Deer are stupid animals that are hunted as game.

I live in WI and ran into a deer once. Actually, the deer ran into me. While I was driving 55-60 MPH at night on a well traveled road. And I don't mean it ran out in front of me and we collided. I mean it literally ran into my car. It came from the opposite side of the road onto my side of the road and made an impact with my car right by my drivers side window. It tore my rearview mirror off, cracked my window, and dented my car. It also snapped its neck. It took special effort because I was in an area where I could swerve well off the road onto the gravel and it still hit me.

Fear the Deer indeed.

I thought it sounded kind of queer at first, but I'm starting to dig it now. The logo is sick and the colors are fresh. Can't wait to see what it will look like on the hardwood.

And other than Michael Jordan saying he was considering taking back the name Hornets, is there any word if they're taking that name back?

I read that someone here suggested the Carolina Flight as an alternate for the Bobcats.... totally digging the double entendre with that name!
