Did Monroe deserve to be an All-Star?
Let me first say I don't care at all about All-Star selections. I think they are meaningless and don't care if Monroe made it or not. I'm just curious what other ppl think, because while normally Monroe would not deserve to be an All-Star being on a losing team, this year the rules seem to be different. 8 players selected from non-winning teams. So it appears to be all about stats and/or popularity (those who got in w/ fan votes) this year, regardless of team records.
If thats the case, comparing Monroe's stats to some of the other bigs who either made it or are in the discussion for being slighted, Monroe has as good of stats or better than all of them, imo. If its based just on stats, did Monroe get slighted?
Even if he didn't deserve to make it, I just find it odd that he hasn;t even got mentioned at all, given what we now know as just an all-stat team, basically. Because his stats are among the best in the East for bigs.
ppl will criticize his FG%, but Noah made it with a 45% FG. And as much as he gets criticized for having a worse season than last year, he's actually posted A LOT of All-Star type games this year. I've consistently criticized him for his defense all year, but when guys like Lee, Irving, and Harden get in who are just as bad of defenders, defense obviously isn't a factor.
Monroe's stats and highlights:
15.3 pts, 9.1 rebs, 3.3 asts, 1.3 stls on 47% FG in 32 mpg.
16 dbl-dbls on season (only 1 less than Chandler), including 7 in his last 10 games.
Triple double of the 20-10-10 variety.
35/10 game
20-20 type game (19pts, 18rebs)
Four 20-10 games
Thats pretty much right in line with the amount and type of big games the other bigs had. I think if you wanted to, a strong case could made for Monroe deserving to be on the team, based on these rules this year.

no i don't think he deserves it. there are much better CONSISTENT players. Additionally Moose isn't exactly our go to player, particularly down the stretch, something that i think holds some weight.

7 dbl-dbls in his last 10 games and 16 overall at the midway point is pretty consistent for a big man.
He's not really a go-to player, but most of the bigs in the East aren't either. Its a guard/forward league. Noah, Chandler, Lopez, etc aren't go to guys.

Re: Did Monroe deserve to be an All-Star?
I think Moose deserved to be an All Star last year.
This year? No way!
This year has been a train wreck for him at times. I think in some sense it is a character developing year. What will he do? Will the adversity (inconsistent play) lead him to get stronger, get more aggressive, and get a more consistent J and develop into a better defender?
He bounced back during his first season. He learned how to get his shot off. Then he took a step in his second year. Now he's struggled with being the focal point. Moose is better than that.

Had he been selected it would have been justifiable, but I'm not surprised he wasn't. In fairness to Greg, his role has changed this year and he's still adjusting to different expectations, and struggling to some degree. He still needs to get stronger. Greg isn't athletic enough to play pure finesse. Further, his hesitancy makes him look bad on some occasions. In the loss to the Bulls his repeated refusals to take open mid range shots that then led to even worse shots are an explanation of why he might not be viewed as All-Star material. Greg has been doing this a lot all year.

No. A lot of meaningless, inefficient, and un-impactful stats. Poor in the clutch. Combine that with taking a major step back defensively this year and the answer is no. Wish he would make the All Star game to improve his trade value though.

Re: Did Monroe deserve to be an All-Star?
Not this year - last year, yes.
As for his future, you've gotta be kidding me if you want him traded. Greg is a perfect player to pair with Drummond. With Andre, we'll dominate the meridian near the rim. With Monroe, we'll have perhaps the best high post PF in the game - a superior passer, and a guy who will get better and better and knocking down mid-range jumpers, (He's been reluctant to take that shot - but that'll come along in years to come), and he's great at putting the ball on the floor and is very strong at the rim. They'll dominate any team on the boards. Andre alone will dominate at C, and Monroe will be absolutely one of the best rebounding PF's anywhere.
I think we've got a duo that will make a lot of all-star teams together. Drummond, I think will be the top center in the league within 3 years, and Monroe will be one of the best PF's and will make several all-star teams.

Yeah, no way this year. He isn't even a top 3 center in the east which means he is a no go. I coulda argued it last year but this year? Not a chance.

I just stated he deserved to be an All-Star last season...One could argue that he was snubbed this season too...Name 2 other Center or Power Forwards who's putting up 15pts and 9rebs in the East...Yet K. Irving made the All-Star game and his team record is 11-32...That's bogus man...

This ESPN writer actually said Dre should have been an all star
But, no, Moose shouldn't have been an all star. Brook Lopez didn't even make it.

He got robbed big time last year but not this year. Noah didn't deserve it either. Varejão would be there 100% for sure but he got injured.

You can say the same things for the 8 players that were selected from non-winning teams. Considering none of their stats led to a winning record, you could say they were meaningless, un-impactful stats as well. In addition, a lot of players who play no defense were selected, and thats never been a prerequisite anyways.
It used to be winning at least mattered, but not really the case anymore. So if I'm just looking at the sheer numbers, I gotta say Monroe would've been as deserving as any of these bigs/forwards selected.
imo, its not just the stats though, and its not whether they are meaninful or not either. Its simply which players have the flashy, exciting, high-energy games that the NBA wants to showcase All-Star weekend. For plodding bigs like Monroe and Lopez, they have no chance. Probably why they wanted to eliminate the Center position altogether. Big, slow, methodical Centers aren't considered entertaining anymore.
Pretty much why the whole thing is meaningless to me. But I do think Monroe had as good a season as any of these guys.

Re: Did Monroe deserve to be an All-Star?
No. I think last year he had a strong case, especially because centers were still in their own category as far as all star selections go. Hibbert was putting up an efficient 13/9/2 on a winning team, while anchoring a very solid defense. I thought Moose was a lot more valuable to our team though last year compared to Hibbert to his team, but coaches reward winning most of the time, so it is what it is.
As for this year, no. Moose clearly didn't deserve it. Lopez obviously was more deserving. David West, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Boozer were also more deserving. All of those guys are putting up better stats on teams with better records.
The one guy that I was absolutely shocked made it was Luol Deng...whats the deal with that? That's horrible. There are so many front court players that are more deserving than him. One of Lopez, Jsmoove, Al, West or Boozer should have been there instead. Whats the deal?
The key to whether or not Moose and Knight ever make an all star team will be our record. Coaches reward winning most of the time. Kyrie Irving is an exception....shocked he made it as well. Would have rewarded JR Smith instead who is having a terrific season.

Re: Did Monroe deserve to be an All-Star?
I was iffy last year based on our team's performance up to that point. Its worth remembering that much of our pre-All Star break time was consumed by a horrific 4-20 start that probably spelled doom for any realistic All Star chances.
This year I agree with the consensus though. He hasn't had anything close to an all star season this year. There are a number of other bigs who weren't picked who deserve it over him. Brook Lopez is the most glaring snub as he's clearly been the best player on a fairly successful Nets team this year, but there's a couple of others I'd consider more worthy as well.
Lopez's numbers are more impressive when one factors that he plays 29 mpg. His per minute rebounding rate has actually been respectable this year, and that was the primary knock on him previously.
I'll be honest when I say that I didn't even have Bosh on my shortlist heading into this. I thought Lopez, West, and Smith at the very least were more deserving. Heck, I'd even consider making a case for Boozer over Bosh this season. Lopez should have made it over a couple of players that did IMO.
