Pau catches, looks for a pass, and shoots as a last recourse.
Kobe catches, dribbles, posts up, and shoots.
Artest only catches and shoots rarely. Most of the time he catches, dribbles and shoots.
Clark catches, drives and shoots.
The only real catch and shooter on the team is Meeks, but he's a black-hole and an inefficient one at that.
It sure seems like for Nash to be truly effective, he needs guys to catch and shoot and make at a high clip. It not only spreads the floor for guys like Dwight, but it keeps the defense from collapsing on Nash as well.
Yeah, if you are the defense and are not worried about guys catching and shooting you will just leave them "somewhat open" and make sure to lock up the roll man and not allow Nash a wide open look. That's why you see the mid range guy open so much for the Lakers (when they do actually run the pick and roll). Team's are "giving up something" (that is what the pick and roll does it makes the defense give up something) but it is not something the Lakers want.
You'll notice the one shot the Lakers got in the Memphis game off the pick and roll was Clark for the mid range shot. I think he also got one layup off it.
This team is not playing correctly off the pick and roll at all so its really hard to judge it based on that. But the Suns teams constantly rotated different guys in and it always worked. But you have to be able to make open shots and take them. That is basketball. The Lakers can't and hold the ball...so that's a problem.
