Miller basically stood on his head on took the game from us. Agree with venom that we played pretty well. There were some defensive lapses at times. What really did us in was not taking advantage of those early powerplays we got in the first period, especially when it was 5-3.

Carlyle looks to have them playing a controlled style which is much better than under Wilson and everyone just scrambling.

I still don't like Kessel being our lead scorer without a C. And getting a tope end one will probably mean our first line will make around 20 million if we re-sign Kessel to around 7-8 million.

I don't think many of the chances were great ones, though

Agreed. There were some great chances though (Kadri to Liles comes to mind), but for the most part, we didnt get a lot of great chances.

Good win.

The one thing I've noticed about this team is that they don't get hemmed in their own zone for long stretches like they did under Wilson. Whatever he was preaching for getting the puck out of your own end was not working. It often felt like we were playing 5 against 6 guys in our zone. Don't see that anymore so far this season.

one thing about this season that is more and more apparent:
there is no way to predict the standings. a shortened season is the biggest dice roll out there. the first 1-2 weeks of this season are a guessing game, but that guessing game is enough to get border-line playoff teams into the playoffs and vice versa.
i thought the Leafs would finish around 14th in the East. i may have to guess again in 2 weeks.

With Lupul out now, we'll suffer huge. But the game on the ice has been decent. Very conservative, but that's fine. I think in the long run though Scrivens and Reimer are brutal and it'll come out eventually.

Since the Leafs traditionally only play well for half a season, or even just a quarter of a season, a shortened season definitely helps if the next 2 months are their patented "good months".

That said, I did chuckle at the irony of Lupul already being out like 2 games after he signed his contract. To be fair, though, you couldn't blame his "injury prone-ness" for this one.

Scrivens looked really, really horrible.
He needs another 1-2 years of seasoning in the minors before being NHL ready. not saying that based on him being shelled. it is his stance. so weird and twitchy. very non-traditional, but i also don't see how it is beneficial.

3-4 games into a shortened season and the standings are a mess. washington is winless, the Rangers are near the bottom of the east and Montreal and the Islanders are currently in the playoffs. hah.

as a Leafs' fan, i'd be hoping that, by game 10, if there still are goaltending issues, you place a call to LA and do something to pry Bernier out of there. scary to say it, but the Leafs are a slight goalie upgrade and a 1-Dman player upgrade from being a 7-8 playoff spot IF the East continues to be a strange mess.

There was a palpable shift in energy after the first period. Franson was just awful, too. I think getting a shut down D man is more important than goaltending right now, but the Leafs could still make the playoffs with this team. Scrivens and Reimer are C goalies between the two of them. I think they're both capable of being Bs for stretches, so we'll just have to mix and match.

Frattin's goal last night was an incredible display of skill.

I would love to get Bernier, even if the player cost is equivalent to Luongo just because you're prying a young guy away that can be your goalie for the next 15 years if he gets to where he should be.

As for this season, for some reason I get the feeling that we will somehow make our way to the playoffs just cause of the quirkiness that is the shortened season but next year we could take a step back again if there aren't major upgrades over the next 12 months.

Yesterday was not good but the team overall has played better in their own zone compared to years past.

I don't think Nonis is going to do anything to make a push for the playoffs this year. I expect maybe some smaller deals but expect bigger things in the offseason.

As for Bernier, going after a 'good' back-up is not a good idea and see it as a classic Leafs move - handing over the reins to someone who hasn't proven anything yet. Is he better than Reimer and Scrivens, probably but maybe not. He hasn't played more than 25 games in a season.

Personally, due to the market the Leafs are in I think they should be going after a vet goaltender. This market is tough on a young goalie and having him take his bumps while having to deal with media takes it toll. They need to bring in a vet who can be steady and take the brunt of the heat from the media. Then when we do acquire/draft a quality goaltending prospect, have them play under the vet until there's no choice to start them (Potvin when he became the #1 over Fuhr). This is how I'd be handling the situation anyhow.

Yawn. Leafs goalies suck. What else is new? People keep hoping for one of our scrub goalies to have a career year or hot streak, but reality always sinks in.

I'm also on board with the plan of bringing in a veteran goalie for a few years to hold down the fort until we can develop/sign a long term replacement. Or hell, just keep bringing in vets.

I'd take a chance on Tim Thomas if he comes relatively cheap.

I too would like Thomas, but he has said he is not playing in the NHL this year. Though, I dont know if he just doesnt want to play for the Bruins or if he is just flat out not going to play.

Can you believe we could have had Vokun for a 7th rounder? It would have really nice to have him.

I really don't think the team needs a veteran goaltender at all. I really don't see the point in it. Let the young guys play (good or not) and get a good draft pick this year. There's a lot of talent in the top of this draft, much better than last years draft.

Agree with this. If ever there's a year to not go for the playoffs this is the one. You don't feel the pain of a losing season for as long as a normal season. And we all know need some high end talent. That's why making a play for Luongo now makes little to no sense. If he gets dealt somewhere else, so be it. If we make it to the end of the season and we get a good pick, high end forward then maybe you re look at Luongo in the off-season if he hasn't been dealt.

That's also not considering his cap hit under the new system which is like a double-whammy. This is the time to sit and out-wait Gilllis and the Canucks.

I would say this, taking a chance on acquiring Bernier is something I would consider. He's a young prospect goalie who is seen as having more upside than either of Reimer and Scrivens but I wouldn't break the bank either and we certainly can't afford giving up youth at this point.

i would maybe blame Reimer on 1 of yesterday's goals.
the D didn't tie up players' sticks. bush league defence.

but Reimer is still an easy goalie to beat. the top 25% of the net's open. just shoot upstairs.
