Baseball's unwritten rules

Post#1 » by skitch815 » Thu May 31, 2007 10:19 pm

With all the talk about A-Rod's calling 'mine' being against baseball's "unwritten rules" I got to thinking. What are these rules? I know of a few;

-Don't steal late in the game with a big lead
-Don't take pitches on 3-0 late in the game with a big lead
-Don't throw at the other teams pitcher while he's batting

I thought of others earlier today but my mind has gone blank. What are some other "rules"?

Don't stand in the on-deck circle while a pitcher is warming up and time your practice swings to his pitches.

And, apparently, if you walk into a clubhouse toilet stall and Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire are there with their pants down around their ankles, don't tell anybody.

I think you're supposed to throw at the other team's pitcher when he's batting. That's how they used to get teams back before the DH. You throw at my guy, I'm throwing at you. mahalo

Don't send up a pinch hitter to bunt in the middle of a no hitter.

The first one depends on the lead, I say 5 runs in the 8th or 9th, anything else is fair game, especially if you have apen like the Yankees.

The second one I think you got confused...Your supposed to swing at a 3-0 fastball when leading late in the game, when that fastball is likely to be slower than usual and down the middle?

No thats what they said. I suppose the theory is that you'll hit the ball or at least foul away a bad pitch..i dunno, but thats the way they said it.

No, Im pretty sure that youre not supposed to actually throw at the pitcher. I think that they throw at your power hitter, you through at theirs, that type of thing.

It's basically don't bunt at all at the end of a no hitter.

Don't trick a guy into sliding into a base if nothing is gained by it (aside from the sliding player risking injury).

Don't listen to ReddBogutCharlieV.

But it is ok to trick a player into believing a throw is not coming, as it is to fake losing a fly ball in the sun.

That's what they do now with the DH and people babying pitchers. But back in the day, if you hit a team's best hitter, you best watch out when you come to bat against Bob Gibson because you're likely to get one right in the ear. mahalo

Best One:
When an opposing team hits a home run at Wrigley you have to throw it back.

relief pitchers always throw fastballs to other relief pitcher that are batting - no breaking balls.

Ok, I was kind of sleeping last night when I replied but what I meant was that you don't take a pitch that would be ball 4 with a huge lead if its possible to just take a cut at it.

As for the throwing at pitchers, I agree that thats how it used to be done but definitely not anymore, which explains why Roger Clemens hasn't caught a fastball to the head yet.
