Please Help the General NBA Board...

Post#1 » by Jake0890 » Sun Jan 27, 2013 1:38 am

I think there really needs to be a way to restrict the threads that are made in the General NBA forum. Recently, the majority of threads are Lakers threads or Avery Bradley threads. The mods there have closed some excessive threads, but the amount of thread spam is just ridiculous. All of the threads about the same thing lead to people replying with "Oh great, another one", then someone will always reply with, "If you don't like it, don't reply" getting the thread off topic and making the problem worse.

Maybe impose punishments for unnecessary threads... I don't know exactly, but the the General Board is really becoming the Lakers board.

The Lakers are a popular topic; general discussion relates to big news and issues in the league, and LA is one such, so much like the last two years with the Heat, they are on the brain.

Obviously LA is a big topic nowadays, but Pau Gasol trade scenarios and Dwight quotes aren't something I'd consider big news.

The thing with so many threads you think are duplicate topics or not worthy of discussing is that as long as the topic is not against the rules (trolling, baiting etc.) there's nothing we can do about. Of course, if there are several threads created at the same time to discuss the very same thing (like when the news were broke that the Kings were sold to the Seattle group) it's an exception and we do our best to merge the topics or lock the smaller/more recent threads. But as long as a topic does not violate any rules and addresses as specific topic it's fair game to me. It's up to the users to decide whether it's worthy to talk about.

If someone makes a comment like "There's a team board for this" or "Great, another thread about [team x]" report it and we take care of it. Otherwise people should just let a thread die.

On that topic...

Don't be that guy who says "this doesn't belong here" in the thread, that is backseat moderating. Use the report function, it exists for a reason, as Basti noted.

I must correct myself... the Celitcs have taken over the Lakers in the # of threads they have.

Welcome to "trending topics," lad. It's a reality of the GB, you just have to deal with it. If a thread is clearly something for a team board, report it and we'll see if the mod team agrees with you but like Basti said, a lot of them are legit topics. It's just what is on people's minds.

I merged a ton of Rondo threads earlier this evening because they were all the same thing, but at some point, the Rondo injury (for one example) is just what people want to talk about it, so there it is.

I think you should take a closer look at some team boards as well. I know the GB is known as the "lawless zone" but i think the other boards get a little too much of the benefit of the doubt. Just my two-cents

When the moderators from those boards ask for assistance, they will have it. To date, they have been largely content to keep to themselves, save for the larger boards like Toronto/New York/Chicago/Lakers. Until then, though, we'd mostly rather not step on their toes if they don't feel they have issues.

bertrob,

Like Tsherkin says, I do give Moderating teams some leeway in how they run each forum.

If there is a problem, they inform me and we fix it.

If you ever feel like there is a problem anyway, feel free to share your thoughts as we want to make every user's forum experience the best that it can be.
