Pierce blew this game with that turnover. Never should have stopped his dribble.

Some guy behind the Celtics bench wearing a "Lebron went south but his Mom rides West" T-Shirt.

The West cracks never get old.

Jeff Green is always just good enough to keep both teams in the game

Exactly. A guy who practically carried that Heat team on his back during the playoffs and is doing so again this season isn't a choker anymore. Haters gonna hate, but it's hard not to respect the type of player he is. He's just on a whole 'nother level.

The stats enhance the eye test, otherwise no need to watch the games.

Sometimes I wonder what fans did back in the day before all this.

21shumpshumpst wrote:Btw can someone explain to me how these great stats on isolation by the all mighty Synergy are compiled?

They have a bunch of guys looking at video on a computer, annotating each play they see. I know because I took the online test to become one of those guys (but I guess I didn't do well enough to qualify).

21shumpshumpst wrote:Does it take into account that sometimes when you are isolated and your man breaks your ankle the opposing team may or may not have a good help defending big that stops points from being scored?

Closest man that contests the shot, causes the TO, or commits the shooting foul is credited with being the defender in isolation. If no one contests the shot, it is left to the judgment of the analyst to determine who the closest defender is.

21shumpshumpst wrote:Does it take into account the defensive scheme being used for help defending vs said isolations? Because it is rare in the nba to see a man be left on his own in isolation situations without
No it does not. The offensive play is annotated (isolation, pnr ball handler, pnr roll man, post up, spot up, off screen, cut, handoff), but the defensive scheme is not, not that I know of.

21shumpshumpst wrote:How about does it take into account number of isolations ? For example, maybe Lin was allowed to be isolated 10 times vs 100 for another pg.

The stats include the number of instances.

For example, Lin defended 91 plays in isolation, which is 16.4% of the total plays he has defended this year. Opponents have scored .76 points per possession on isolation plays on Lin. It also gives the FGM, FGA, 3PM, 3PA, % of isolation plays that ended in a Shooting Foul, and 1's, % that ended in a TO, and % that ended in a score.

For synergy, a "play" means a possession that ends in a FGA, TO, or FTA.

You can check http://www.mysynergysports.com/ to see for yourself. Apparently they give you three freebies, so you can look up 3 players' stats for free.

21shumpshumpst wrote:Or the fact that sometimes pgs are hidden from the best iso scorer on the other team as part of hte initial defensive scheme? So for example you wouldn't put Nash on CP3 you would put Kobe. Thanks

The Synergy analyst is instructed to record the closest defender to the offensive player when the offensive player shoots, turns it over, or draws a shooting foul.

21shumpshumpst wrote:Sorry one last thing what is their criteria for isolation? Thanks

Any play that ends in a FGA, TO, or FTA that's not a PnR, post up, spot up, catch and shoot shot off a screen, cut, or a handoff.

If the play falls into a grey area, the analyst (video guy annotating the play) uses their best judgment in assigning which play type it is.

Hey man one more question. What are the requirements to be able to do this job? Could any person off the street apply or is there a specific skillset that an analyst needs?

How much do you pay?
Thanks

I did this two years ago and here's the email I got:
Subject: Synergy Logging: Basketball Familiarity Quiz‏

From: Synergy Logging Opportunities (logger@synergysportstech.com)

Thank you for your interest in becoming a contract logger for Synergy Sports Technology. This email is confirmation that we have received your answers to the first part of the screening survey.

Synergy uses a 2-step process to log basketball games, and each step involves a different knowledge base. Phase One logging requires a minimal understanding of the mechanics of basketball, while Phase Two logging demands comprehension of the subtle intricacies of the game.

The link at the bottom of this email will take you to a Basketball Familiarity Quiz that will help determine if you qualify for training in either Phase One or Phase Two basketball logging. Some of the quiz questions are quite basic, while others call for a deep understanding of how basketball is played and coached. Everyone is required to take the quiz, whether they wish to take training in Phase One or Phase Two logging, so if you are unsure of an answer, please indicate “don’t know.” Answering “don’t know” will not necessarily eliminate you as a candidate for training. The purpose of the quiz is to assess your familiarity with basketball in order to correctly place you into the appropriate level of training.

You can take the quiz whenever you wish, but you must answer all the questions once you begin (there are 40 questions). You can use the “previous” button to navigate back in the quiz to make changes, but once you have submitted your answers at the end of the quiz, you cannot go back to change anything.

Both the survey and the quiz must be completed in order for you to be considered for the training. The results of the survey and quiz will be analyzed, and those who meet certain benchmark criteria will receive an offer to begin either the Phase One or Phase Two tutorial. No compensation will be provided for the training process.

For those who are chosen to begin the online training, here is the sequence of events you will undertake in order to become certified as either a Phase One or Phase Two Basketball Logger for Synergy Sports Technology.
1) Step One - complete the Basketball Knowledge tutorial, which covers the types of basketball events that loggers identify during the logging process.
2) Step Two – take the Basketball Knowledge Exam, which will assess your learning from the tutorial. The exam will be graded by a member of the Synergy Sports training staff, and you will be notified if you meet the criteria for the next step of training.
3) Step Three – if notified of a passing grade on the Basketball Knowledge Exam, complete the Synergy Software tutorial, which covers the basic function of the software used to log games.
4) Step Four – take the Synergy Software Exam, which will assess your learning from the tutorial. The exam will be graded by a member of the Synergy Sports training staff. If you pass the exam, you will be contacted to schedule a live training session on the logging software.
5) Step Five – complete a live software training session with a member of the Synergy staff. You will be required to download and install the Synergy Sports Logging Software on your computer and to obtain a Skype account.
6) Step Six – complete the Final Exam. For the Final Exam, you will be required to log a complete game using the Synergy Sports logging software. If you pass the final exam, you will be given materials explaining the overall workflow that Synergy staff and loggers use to schedule and log games.

We anticipate that the online tutorials can be completed in less than one day. The live training and the final exam may take significantly longer. Upon successful completion of the training, you will receive a certificate signifying that you meet the criteria of either a Phase One Basketball Logger or a Phase Two Basketball Logger.

Please keep in mind that while receipt of the certificate is not an offer of contract employment with Synergy Sports Technology, you must have a certificate in order to log games for Synergy—no exceptions will be made. Those who successfully finish the training will be placed on a list for contact on an “as needed” basis by the company. The numbers of loggers required at any given time will depend on the numbers of basketball games to log. Names of certificate holders will remain on the list, and if the demand for loggers increases during the basketball season, Synergy staff will select people from the list to contact.

Click here (http://www.synergysportstech.com/Loggin ... arity.aspx) to pull up the page that will start you on the Basketball Familiarity Quiz. Good luck!

I have no idea how much they pay. I never made it past Phase 2, Step 2.
