Calderon

Post#1 » by Goldtop » Tue Jan 29, 2013 8:17 pm

Toronto and Memphis are trying to make a deal for Gay, but need a 3rd team to take Calderon.

Not sure what the framework of the deal would need to be to get Calderon, but hes an expiring contract. Should we be interested?

Why would we want Calderon? He is a revolving door on defense and we have Knight at PG. We need a SG.

Expiring contract. I was thinking Stuckey for Calderon. We save money on Stuckey's contract, and get a better guard for the 2nd half of the season to help make a run at the playoffs.

I'm not sure where he'd fit with Bynum and Knight already at PG, but the way I see it, Stuckey doesn't fit either, so I'd rather have the exp contract and the better player. And then worry about where he fits later. If he doesn't fit oh well, nothing lost, and you get $10 mil more in capspace this summer.

But I'm sure we coud find some way to play him off the bench, just like we find a way to play Stuckey. For instance, the games Bynum has an off night, you go with Calderon. Or when we go small with 3 guard. Or could even start at SG with his great shooting ability, and he and Knight could share PG duties, which is probably ideal anyways. Its not like Singler is shutting ppl down at SG either.

This is crazy but i'd be willing to throw out Kyle Singler, Stuckey, and a second rounder for Calderon and the Pargo trade exception from Memphis in a three way deal. Singler would give the Grizz a younger wing and a solid scorer off the bench.

I'd flip Maggette for him, but I don't see the appeal for Memphis in having a worse expiring.

They want a young asset or draft pick for Calderon. Obviously they would just take Calderon over Maggette because Maggette sucks.

Calderon is being shopped since the draft and Toronto asking price has always been too high, that's why he is still there. I can't see Memphis wanting Stuckey for Calderon, makes no sense for them.

Calderon and Knight starting as our guards would be a disaster, we need a big PG capable of defend SGs or we need a PG and SG and move Knight to the bench. I'd try to get Lowry not Calderon.

I think you're overrating quite a few of those players in that lineup.

Besides, Dumars got us better players at 3 of those 5 positions. Our froncourt is better, and I think Knight is going to be a better overall player than Lowry. So unless you think Gay and Derozan are good enough to outweigh our advatanges at 3 positions, not to mention our better bench, then your post doesn't make much sense.

Slow down...several teams have been involved in the Rudy Gay trade rumors. Don't forget that Brian Colangelo is the greatest GM in the league when it comes to helping rebuild other franchises, but not his own. No doubt he played a big role in landing Drummond here in Detroit...

As for the trade, I would do it. I don't see Calderon here long term, but it would be nice to have a real PG to mentor Knight and allow him to watch how its done night in and night out, and he's an expiring...which is a huge plus.

I'm really only interested in Calderons exp contract, but I think he would also be an upgrade off the bench over Stuckey for a half season rental. Just from a overall guard standpoint, I think Calderon better fits this team. He gives us a better shooter and better pick/roll playmaker. If the Bynum-Drummond pick/roll is this successful, imagine how great it could be with Calderon/Drummond?

And if it doesn't work, we just get his capspace, and if we weren't going to keep Stuckey anyways, then nothing really given up in the deal.

For Memphis they kind of do need another scorer at SG, since they didn't resign Mayo, and esp if they are trading Gay. Stuckey could better fill that scorer role than Calderon. Plus, Stuckeys a much better defender, which better fits MEM style.

For us, our 2nd unit is all about scoring and Calderon would fit in great. He's a good enough shooter that he could play off the ball with Bynum on that unit. And with Drummond in there he'd cover for Bynum/Calderon defensively.

Bynum
Calderon
Daye
CV
Drummond

Id prefer this lineup off the bench to the one we've been seeing with Stuckey included.

I would looooooooooooooooooooooooooove if we picked up Calderon somehow.

Would be nice for Knight to have some competition and he may cut down on his 1 assist 4 turnover games.

Good point. Another advantage I didn't think about. He could be that vet true PG to help teach Knight the position.

Calderons ast-to ratio this year:

7.4 ast to 1.7 to :o

DET gets Calderon

I've seen Calderon completely take games over before with just passing. He is also reportedly very coachable and very respected (and liked) amongst his teammates.

Perfect fit for this team. We are in a playoff race (like it or not). He'd contribute for sure. I'd take him over Bynum and Stuckey.

Bynum has great chemistry with Drummond. Calderon is a gifted-passer. He could step in and figure the lob out with Dre in no time.
