We don't lose an awful lot defensively when Pondexter comes in for Allen. The difference is Pondexter has become a very good shooter.

I think you feel that way because of how poor the shooting guard position has been in the NBA recently. If you put Allen on Kobe, Jamal Crawford, etc. you notice a clear cut difference.

Pondexter is great and I really feel that he is a key piece for our future. But, we don't need to trade away what makes us great. Neither Pondexter nor Allen should be on the block.

Gay would have to go before either of those two. At least they fill their role. He's not a spectacular defender and he doesn't shoot a high percentage from the field. If you are going to replace anyone with a shooter, it would be him.

What I mean to say is that championship-caliber teams have guys who can defend like TA but also bring at least a three point shot to the table. Guys like Bruce Bowen, Doug Christie, Thabo Sefolosha, and Shane Battier come to mind.

TA can match up with top wing players, but he allows them the luxury of sagging all the way into the paint on defense, or just taking plays off. His offense essentially wipes out his defensive contributions.

Yes, but his role is on defense. The guy that we turn to on offense regularly is Rudy Gay, and he has done an extremely poor job shooting the ball this season. He is not functioning as a Shane Battier, and that is one of our problems apart from the bench.

TA's turnovers forced lead to easy offense. I agree that he is somewhat of a liability in the halfcourt, but he still makes aggressive plays rebounding etc. He's such a valuable glue guy and the only part that I actually would not be willing to trade.

Rudy does not take the same kind of shots as Battier or any other role player. He often has no choice but to force up shots with the shot-clock winding down after "plan A" has failed. He also has not been given the luxury of posting up on the right-block where he is most effective offensively this season, ostensibly because Randolph has been healthy and has occupied that space most of the time (that's where he likes the ball as well).

As for TA, yes it's true he always ranks among the leaders in turnovers forced per 48 minutes. He also turns the ball over himself and misses layups with regularity. He's not just "somewhat of a liability in the halfcourt", he's the biggest offensive liability of any guard that I can remember starting for any team in the NBA at any time. He almost certainly is the worst offensive starting SG/SF in the league right now.

If we were talking about the worst defensive starting SG/SF in the league, no one would be arguing with me I think.

If he was a three point shooter, they might.

wounder why Grizzlies out side getting worse every season?
I thought Rudy was not that bad shooter from perimeter or 3P 4-5years ago.
If Grizzlies can`t spend more money then what about hire Mark Price as shooting coach again?

Rudy's jumpshot has been absent this year. Although he did get it going against the sixers.

It's a reach, but maybe Rudy can use this game win to motivate himself to get his consistancy back on his jumpshot.
