after seeing what a playmaker blake can be without CP3, i am convinced what needs to be done is to shake up our rotation. more specifically, our all 5 subs for all 5 starters. we have a great point forward in blake, but his play becomes limited with a ball dominant PG in CP3. rather than to rely on our backup guards to create when our starters are out, we need to balance our starters' minutes so that we have either blake or CP3 on the floor at all times, if not most of the times to keep a constant pressure on our opposition.
i am convinced blake is more capable than he is showing with CP3 on the floor, but he defers to CP because he is the best playmaker on the floor. but blake can create different situations that we can take advantage of and if lamar ever gets his mid range game back, he is just as effective on the floor with CP3 with the way chris uses blake similar to david west as a spot up shooter. don't get me wrong, CP3 is a great player. but he is a ball dominant player and i think blake is more effective when the ball is in his hands.
by splitting their time on the floor together, we can maximize what both players can bring.
i want to hear what you fellas think about this. please discuss.

Re: vinny needs to change up our hockey rotation
I'm confused what your saying exactly, what lineup do you want to see?
Are you saying you don't want Paul and Blake starting together? then No I'd have to disagree emphatically, I get what your saying with Blake's playmaking and your dead on. Paul does have the ball (obviously) a lot, and Blake's passing game could be used far better when Paul's back.
The answer to me is not that extreme, Paul and Blake are stars, them together can be/already are lethal and will only get better. The answer for me is elsewhere with the lineups, keep he starters the same, except Willie Green, I'd like to see Barnes start instead, with Butler at SG because he's basically our catch and shoot guard anyway.
Rest CP3 and Blake separately though would seem smart, basically always, we need one on the floor as much as possible just to play through them, take CP out, Blake can be the play maker, and visa versa, it could be really a lethal combination to mix up on teams, dominant outside guard playmaking or dominant inside forward play making, could you imagine? Take whoever's struggling out first, and if thats none of them then it's a win win situation.
I do get what your saying but you can't not start Blake and Paul together.

Re: vinny needs to change up our hockey rotation
Hes saying we should stagger our rotations in a fashion that allows for one of our primary playmakers to always be on the floor. PJ did it with MJ+Pippen back in the day. Kobe+Odom in the .500 days as well. I think the Thunder are doing it this year with Westbrook+Durant now that they dont have Harden to run the 2nd unit.
I was thinking we would eventually do this, but with how good the 2nd unit has played, I think VDN has wanted to keep the consistency going and its not a bad idea to have something up your sleave for the playoffs.
That said, I wouldn't be opposed to starting it now either.
Also, I feel like coaching staff didn't think it was a priority to stagger CP3/Blake's minutes because our 2nd unit is actually filled with all sorts of passers/facilitaters (Odom+JC+EB+Hill), even Barnes used to run PG back in HS. BTW what did you guys think of the non-PG lineup?

Re: vinny needs to change up our hockey rotation
I don't think the paul-griffin chemistry has fully developed yet and I'd hate to start mixing up things when our rotations have been working.
With that being said, I agree BG's passing isn't being fully utilized but I think with time that may change. When billups comes back, I rather see him play more minutes with the second unit.

Re: vinny needs to change up our hockey rotation
BG just went back to rookie season Blake once Paul went out. It is an improved version though.
I have never really been a fan of the hockey shift line-ups in basketball, but it's mostly worked for this season due to the depth. The bench has been our defensive unit and work well together, so I haven't really minded much. With less than a half of a season left, it's all about gearing up for the playoffs. For that reason, I'd like to see Vinny toy around with some new line-ups to see what works and what doesn't. In the postseason, other teams are always going to have one of their better players on the floor at all times (or at least 90% of the time), so we need to be able counteract that.

you got it right, chronie. and i think vinny needs to start doing this now as the opportunity is here with our best player out. even when CP3 returns, we need to limit his minutes to keep him fresh going into the playoffs and blake is young enough to be the main guy during the remaining reguar season, and let him be the playmaker he can be to enforce our lack of playmaking pointguards until then.
CP3 is injured, Billups is almost ready but will need to use the regular season to be his training camp, and will also need to be monitored and limit his minutes to avoid further injuries. that leaves us still 1 PG in bledsoe we can depend on for extended minutes. we need to utilize him as if he was CP and bled and blake can spread their minutes on the floor to be staggered, and both need to learn to be in charge to help us more in playoffs. crawford did not work out in portland because he was asked to be a player he is not, and we shouldn't make the same mistake and have him be our playmaker off the bench.
i also feel we need to increase DJ's minutes and odom's minutes while limiting turiaf and hollins. they are vets and will be there if needed in playoffs, but odom needs to be in better shape, have better confidence, and find his shooting touch again to be what we need him to be later. DJ of course can always use more playing time, and i would rather have him get that now than later.
ehhhhh f it.

Re: vinny needs to change up our hockey rotation
So you dont think Jamal qualifies as a combo-guard anymore? I think he struggled in Portland because they needed a full-time PG, and he was playing in a system that other PG's have complained about before, and he was probably not enthused to be there either. Hes surely declined as a playmaker but Im hoping he's still a guy that can run the point in a pinch and make simple set up plays.
But your right about him being better off as a scorer.
But what would you do in the playoffs? Which lineup will you stick to?

a combo guard off the bench. not a guy who should start full time in either positions.
