Today Rubio was asked if Gasol was being treated fairly.

“I don’t’ think so,” Rubio said. “He proved in the league that he is one of the best. He can pass, he can shoot, he can rebound. He can do a lot of things. I think if you use him in the right way, he is a top player in this league. If they don’t want him, we are more than welcome to get him.”

At this Rubio laughed. But it’s no secret that Gasol’s name has been linked to trade rumors all season.

“He’s been with the Lakers (five-plus) seasons,” Rubio said. “And he’s been a starter since day one. This year – it seems like It’s been the last two years – it seems they don’t want him. But actually they need him, because he’s a great player. He can do a lot of things. He’s had issues with his knees, and it’s been a lot of years without resting for him. But he’s a veteran, he knows how to play. He’s a great player.”

Rubio said he’s in regular contact with Gasol, as he is with other Spanish players playing in the NBA. “It’s hard when you’re hearing things, rumors that you’re going to be traded,” Rubio said. “But he’s a professional. He’s been playing a long time, and he’s going to keep doing what he’s been doing.”

I wouldnt trade anything worth less than the level he played in the 11-12 season and olympics (he was the 5th best player on that team.) because that is the level of play some teams with trade for.

I dont think the Lakers pass on that type of scenario because they get alot of flexibility ... other deals will likely send Lakers another big contract they don't necessarily want. They do need to believe they can move/package the pieces for what they may really want.

The lux may rise a bit, but it's only $70 mil now.

It's not like it's an easy yes for them, but it sure must be hard for them to get a better deal for Gasol... Our advantage on the market is that we actually have DWill as a guy who is a great young prospect and would be in the rotation of almost any team but ours(When Love and DC are healthy), and we have JJ who would work great for Lakers, because they need a guy who can be very productive from the bench offensively which they lack.

Well, if we go for Gasol that means we are chasing playoffs this season and going championship mode in the next season and Taylor is going over the lux. We hope for a good back-up SG in the draft, we hope that Rubio and Love will be playing like last season, we hope that we remain healthy, we hope that Shved plays like he played in the beginning of the season, and we hope that Bud is shooting 3PT at a decent %. Man, that would be nice.

I ran some numbers if we traded Williams + Barea + Roy for Pau Gasol:

Rubio ($3.7), Ridnour ($4.3) vet min PG ($0.85)
Shved ($3.3), Gelabale ($2.1), M. Lee (0.9)
Kirilenko ($10.2), Buddinger ($3.5?) Pick ($1.1)
Love ($14.7), Cunningham ($2.2), Bjelica? ($3.0)
Pekovic ($13.0), Gasol ($20.0), vet min C ($0.85)

Total: $83.7 mil

I split the $5.15 mil MLE between Gelebale and Bjelica. Even if we don't spend it on these two, we will still spend it (add talent while giving up nothing but money). We have two 2nds this summer (OKC and BRK), but I assume that a win-now Adelman will not use them - perhaps trade for future 2nds. There are certainly other moves that a trade-oriented Kahn could make.

The lux right now is at $70.307 - but it might go up. For simplicity, let's say it goes to 73.7 mil, and Taylor is $10 mil over the lux. That will cost:

$83.7 mil in salary
$7.5 mil in lux taxes for the first $5 mil he's over
$8.75 mil in lux taxes for the second $5 mil he's over
$2 mil in the lost share of lux revenues
$102 million dollars

This year he's paying $66.5 mil.

I believe Taylor is willing to go a little over the lux in 2013 as he wants to raise the value of the franchise before he sells off part of his ownership. However, I don't think it's reasonable to expect him to increase his payroll by over 50% in one year.

The Bottom line is what almost all of us already believe: Pau Gasol is too expensive for the Wolves.
