Marreese Speights is playing his way to a decent contract

Post#1 » by TheOUTLAW » Sun Feb 3, 2013 6:48 am

I knew he was okay, but he really appeared to have some bad shooting percentages. He's also had some rumors that he was a bit of a black hole on offense, but I'm really liking this guy. Only one thing, he's looking good enough that he might actually get a pretty big offer this off season. 15.4/6.8 on .534 shooting in around 25 mins a game. Not bad for a guy we were being paid to take.

I hope we trade him.

Because I really don't want to overpay him.

Most I'd do is about MLE size contract.

If Speights can consistently give you 15/7 in 25+mpg, I would go up to $8 million a year for him. The guy is young, has good size/athleticism, can shoot the ball, and is even looking like a decent passer.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

I love this guy's game, but he definitely wont be accepting his player option at this rate and I cant see the Cavs offering him what some other desperate team is likely to throw at him. Unfortunately I think the best thing we can do is try to trade him. There are several playoff teams who would love to have a player of his caliber on their roster. OKC, Miami, LAL, to name a few. Even a team like Minnesota has to be drooling over him. It's really too bad that we wont be able to keep him. Not too many guys legitamately want to play in Cleveland.

Agree on a trade......however we really will not be getting much in return since he will opt out.

I want to see more from him. He could always fill up the stat sheet but struggles with consistency. Hes not the type of guy I would give a big contract to because I dont trust him as a passer.

He does seem to be an MLE type of player to me, but its Cleveland, and if we keep him we will probably have to pay a little more. I wouldnt mind keeping him due to the fact that he is a vet on a very young team that is going to continue to be young with all the draft picks we have upcoming, and the likely Andy trade next year (if he stays healthy long enough to trade).
He also has something to prove, in that he hasnt really had the opportunity to be a starter so far in his career and he should get that here. Even if we can overpay some for a 2 year deal with a team option and some performance bonus cash added, I think he would be a good fit for this team. I dont think it will be long before he is starting over Zeller (whose shooting has really dropped off), maybe even right after the AS break.

Cleveland should trade him before the deadline to a contender because he is going to be looking for big time money this summer and I don't think Cavs want to compromise their 2014 cap. I could see Boston wanting him. They are badly in need of a center. Maybe Speights in exchange for their 2014 unprotected?

Hes played pretty well so far but hes nothing special. I really dont think he'll demand that big a contract and i certainly wouldnt give him much money. Pleased with him though.

Funny how we got the best player in the trade and a first rounder.

Guys its a little too early to know what you have with this guy. I view him as a divorcee. In his last home he did not get a real chance and that has to have left him with a bad taste. Here he has a real chance and I think he knows it. I do not see him as a Max guy or even close. Hell he does not even start yet (he will).

I'm just glad we have another real big. 8 to 10 mill is most likely the range we are talking for Speights. That really does not scare me for a decent big or decent back up.

Look at Miami, besides 3 big contracts they have garbage. I think we have nothing to worry about. Let him grow. Start Him and keep him happy here. He sould give you respect in return.

I know I know we are talking the NBA and free agents but that's the way it should be.
