Trade idea: Jefferson for Vasquez
Here's the catch: we do this "trade" in July by not re-signing Al and signing Vasquez. Then we attempt to re-sign Millsap.

He will only be a free agent if NOH does not pick up his option, which NOH most likely will.

Ah, crap. I was under the impression he was a RFA because someone said he'd likely earned a big deal in the offseason.
I guess they meant an extension.

Yeah trust me I want him too, can you imagine a back court of him and Burks, they are both 6'6". But Ill settle for Archie Goodwin or Trey Burke in the draft.

i don't fully get why so many people here want goodwin. our first and most pressing need is PG and he is a SG. moreover, he is pretty much alec burks. here is small description of him from sheridanhoops, stop me if it sounds familiar:
"While Goodwin is not the quintessential shooting guard, he is an excellent slasher and attacker. While Goodwin will never be an elite shooter, his performance this year for the defending champs has been solid, and he is often times being the guy with the ball in his hands during crunch time.
Due to his slender frame, it is impressive that Goodwin is as good of a rebounder as he is, averaging 5.0 per game. Goodwin seems to fit in the mind of many NBA evaluators is as a 3rd guard, 6th man type that will be the leader of an offense while he is on the court.
While it is not set in stone what type of role Goodwin will have in the NBA, it’s easy to see he has a defined skill that is hard to find. Some team will probably pull the trigger on Goodwin in the lottery."

sounds like alec burks to me.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Re: Trade idea: Jefferson for Vasquez
I like vasquez' game, hes big, he can pass and hes a threat. I think a lot of people forget but Big Al is our #1 offensive weapon. we may not all like it, but Al is a solid rebounder and one of the only guys on the team that you can throw the ball to and he can get a good look at the hoop. Chuck Hayes played him really tough last night and he struggled a bit, but he is still going to get you around 17 pts and 10 rebounds every night. There is not another guy on the team who can do that for us. Favors is not there yet, Enes is not there yet. Millsap is a great player but he is extremely undersized. He cant get clean looks at the basket like Al can, he gets pushed a round a little bit by bigger power forwards like pau gasol, zac randolph, etc. If anything, i think it makes the most sense this year to keep quiet through the trade deadline and go into the off season with a crap ton of cap space. KOC and Dennis Lindsey aren't going to make a deal just to make a deal. They will only make a move if it is a "permanent" upgrade for the franchise.

I'm wondering if you read my initial post.
In any case, this idea is a waste of time since Vasquez won't be a free agent like I thought.

that's all sounds good and makes a lot of sense, until you take a look at the free agent list this off season and realize there is no major free agents who will upgrade this team that the jazz can realistically get. and then there's that issue where many other teams have a lot of cap space and will give the jazz a run for their money for whatever leftovers remain when the dust settles after the big names sign elsewhere.

I thought i heard David Locke mention he will be restricted, so he can take offers from other places, but NOLA has the chance to match. Ill check and get back on that.

According to what I'm seeing on some salary websites, the Hornets/Pelicans have picked up his option for next year--the final year on his rookie contract. Then they have the QO for the 2014-15 season.

I've been wondering the same thing. We really don't want Goodwin. We need first and foremost a PG, and then either a defensive wing or a consistent sharpshooting wing (a la Klay Thompson).

Re: Trade idea: Jefferson for Vasquez
just get on nbadraft.net and look at the 2013 mock and click on Goodwin. Watch the videos of him, his passing skills are ridiculous.

he's averaging 3 assists per game, just like alec burks did his last year in college.
he's averaging 5 rebounds per game, burks averaged 6.5
he's 6'5, burks is 6'6. both are slender slashers who will never be great shooters. both played SG in college and not PG.
"NBA evaluators is as a 3rd guard, 6th man type that will be the leader of an offense while he is on the court." - that's pretty much alec burks.
they are basically the same player. it's not a bad thing, it's just that their skills are too similar for the jazz to draft him - that will be redundant. and even though he may be a good passer, i really wouldn't want the jazz to draft him - being a SG - and try to convert him to PG. just draft a PG and let it be that. there are quite a few PG prospects out there.
and btw, don't get too excited about passes made in an exhibition team scrimmage, which is what those highlights you are referring to are.

Steve Luhm: With trade deadline approaching, Is it interesting Jazz head scout David Fredman attended Saturday night's Minnesota-New Orleans? Twitter @sluhm
as a jazz fan, i really really wish this fact was related to vasquez but, feet on the ground, i doubt new orleans would let him go. at this point, everybody knows the guy can play.

Thats possible unfortunately. I mean who else that we have any shot at getting (or worth the effort to get) would they feel the need to scout at a wolves-hornets game?

it could be aminu, since the hornets declined his qualifying offer and he's a free agent at the end of the year, so maybe they'll want to get something for him. same goes for xavier henry. both of them were selected at the same range as hayward in that draft, and were a possibility for the jazz at the time.
alexy shved is also a possibility.
