Where Will Alex Smith Go?

Post#1 » by JustAwesome » Sat Feb 2, 2013 9:39 pm

With the Super Bowl coming up, more and more people are paying attention to Alex Smith, who has shown a tremendous amount of maturity and professionalism this season after being benched by the San Francisco 49ers. He's already planning on leaving the franchise after the big game. Lots of teams have expressed interest in acquiring the veteran quarterback.

Where do you think he will land? Where should he go?

Well everyone knows what Smith is. He's a great game manager who will play solid, safe, mistake-free football but isn't likely to win too many games on his arm. He should go to a team with a strong running game and solid defense.

I think KC would be a good fit if they decide not to pick a QB with the 1st pick. They'd have a good line, a great RB in Charles and a solid enough D (assuming they add a few pieces). He would make the team respectable again and give them time to groom a QB for the future.

The Jets would also be a good fit IMO. Ryan is coaching for his job and Smith would be a welcome departure from a guy like Sanchez who can't hold on to the football. Minnesota would also be a good fit but I don't think they're ready to move on from Ponder just yet.

Other possibilities: Browns, Eagles, Cardinals.

Jagurars, Eagles, Cardinals.

I don't see him fitting in with Andy Reid. Doubt he heads to KC.

Reid normally does the West Coast offense, so that suits Smith just fine. He only opened up the offense a big because Vick had a strong arm. If the Chiefs pick up Smith, then they'll go with a truer version of his offense.

Really? I think Smith would be great in Andy Reid's offense. Emphasis on making short, quick passes with timing and accuracy which is pretty much Smith's best ability. Can move around a little bit, doesn't have to make too many deep throws.

Chiefs can also provide him with a good ground game to prevent him from having to win games with his arms.

yes, smith could run Reid's offense if he played that way. and he does suck at throwing deep, which is why it will never be enough. i like alex smith, but his best bet if he wants to see more football success is staying on the 49ers as a backup. i'm sure some team will take interest, so he won't have to do that if he doesn't want to.

I would love to keep Alex as a backup, since he's pretty much the ideal backup QB (smart, great team guy, doesn't turn the ball over) but unless he's willing to take a serious pay cut it's not going to happen. Niners have too many other guys to worry about re-signing (Goldson, Anthony Davis, basically our entire D-line) to commit even $5M/yr to a backup QB.

I also think he wants to start, and rightfully so. He's better than a good chunk of the league's starters right now.

I think he either winds up in Oakland or KC, with JAX as the wild card

KC seems like the best fit, but it all depends on what they do with the 1st overall pick.

Cardinals need a vet QB who can get the ball to Fitzgerald.

As much as the Niners would love to have someone like Smith as a backup quarterback, it's a situation that general managers are going to be wise to avoid. The guy believes that he can still play in this league. Hard to blame him, considering how well he did during the season. He shouldn't be content with a backup role. Allow him to leave.

I don't think draft picks would be needed to make that deal happen. Keep in mind that the Jets desperately need to resolve their QB issue. Also, keep in mind that Revis is coming off of a serious injury and has contract issues. General managers factor that stuff in.

I've been thinking the Jaguars would be the most sensible choice. If the Jets offer you Revis for the guy though you take that deal and run.

That would be ideal IMO. Revis' cap hit would basically be absorbed by Smith + Rogers (who I assume we would cut, since he'd be absurdly expensive for a #4 CB) so it wouldn't effect our ability to resign guys too much down the road.

Rogers needs to restructure that contract of his. He's on a good team, and the market isn't exactly begging for him.

Interesting take on how Vick staying in Philly effects the trade market for Smith.

Right now Smith is the best option (and arguably the only option) on the market for teams in need of a proven veteran QB. More buyers than sellers = price goes up.

I think it's actually good for the league that Flynn and Smith are going to be on different teams next season. They're quality quarterbacks, and they can help turn a franchise around. Seen far too many games where poor play from the position just made it not worthwhile to even watch.
