Deadline looming

Post#1 » by OldJazzBones » Wed Feb 6, 2013 5:44 pm

Here's hoping for 0-6 over the next 12 days. We'll be under .500 and out if the play offs.
Will it be enough to force the FO into a trade?

The last spots could end up with the Rockets and Lakers but I don't get as a fan of the club rooting for loses. They'll be prospects that drop and opportunities to trade up in the draft. Plus your new GM stated in an interview the importance of building through the draft and getting some young lotto picks all together. So I doubt a 1st round exit means a spending spree and ending the awesome flexiblity that the Jazz have going forward.
I like my prospects the same way I like my women... foreign- pickIBL

the last thing you want is the jazz making a trade out of panic or necessity instead of a position of strength (in terms of negotiation power\leverage).

Draft Nate Wolters - FAILED
Keep Nate Wolters - FAILED

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

I think the recent spate of injuries (Rondo, Sullinger, Chris Paul, Gasol) has really put a damper on the trade deadline activity. Lots of potential deals have been snuffed out.

Jazz has made some interetings trade without being in desesperate mode.

Hornacek came in 93-94 with jazz being 36-19

Seikaly-Harper fiasco was in 98, with Jazz being a contender.

Korver came with 16-16 record.

Even we were winning when we choose to trade Deron (31-26)

I would like to see us in the lottery just for that outside chance we land in the top 3. The low probability, high-reward of that scenario outweighs the benefits of winning now and playoff experience, in my opinion. Maybe Stern will take some pity on us and hook us up.

Unrelated, but if Seattle got the top pick after the Wizards and Hornets landed it the year after being sold (and also the Cavs getting Kyrie right after Lebron left), even I would start to give the conspiracy theories at least some probability of being true.

You are looking at it from a fan point of view. The Jazz organization has almost always operated as taking the "low-risk, medium-reward" option every time. This means maintaining a playoff team even if it costs a shot at a championship, because the money made from a first- or second-round exit is much more reliably beneficial than losing that money for a slight chance at a championship in 5-10 years. How many teams have gone into full rebuild mode over the last 10 years? And of those teams, how many are realistically fighting for a championship? The Jazz FO (for better or for worse) is always going to take the low-risk path. If we get lucky with a contending team because of it then all the better, but don't hold your breath waiting for the team to aim for the lottery at the cost of playoff money.

Oh you're preaching to the choir about the organizations aversion to risk. I'm well aware we're not gonna trade all the vets and tank, or make some risky trade for a young prospect.

I'm operating under the assumption we won't make any moves by the deadline because they'd all require us to trade the better player for some risky, unproven asset (young prospect, low pick) and we desperately want to win now for no other reason than to maximize profits.

I've also learned to lower my expectations as much as possible so I can just enjoy rooting for this team without thinking about my criticisms of the ownership. So I'm resigned to thinking we won't move either just so I'll be thrilled if we do make a trade.

Uh,yeah I AM looking at it as a fan. Even though the premise of REALGM is to let us fantasize about being in the FO, I don't truly believe I have what it takes.... Amazing how many posters believe their own hype and think they could actually navigate a team. I would MUCH rather see my team lose and have a chance at a high draft pick instead of a first round bounce resulting in a 15-20 pick! The reason ? As a fan I'm in for the long haul always been here since the billy paultz and terry furlow days. I will endure losing for a promising future.
MEDIOCRITY IS HELL!
