Re: Sheridan rumor: Big Al to Spurs?
Well the spurs have the option of making him a "qualifying offer" which then makes him a restricted free agent.
BRING JAMAAL FRANKLIN TO UTAH!!!!!

Splitter is a restricted free agent.
From Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ - question #43:
Splitter's contract was a 3 year deal from 2010-11 to 2012-13. This status is also shown on ShamSports.
From Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ - question #43:
Restricted free agency exists only on a limited basis. It is allowed following the fourth year of rookie "scale" contracts for first round draft picks (see question number 48). It is also allowed for all veteran free agents who have been in the league three or fewer seasons. However, a first round draft pick becomes an unrestricted free agent following his second or third season if his team does not exercise its option to extend his rookie scale contract for the next season. All other free agency is limited to unrestricted free agency.
Splitter's contract was a 3 year deal from 2010-11 to 2012-13. This status is also shown on ShamSports.

Inigo Montoya wrote:and yes - if for the sake of argument we assume the jazz keep splitter - long term he is kanter's backup. splitter is 28 (?) and kanter is much younger and has much more potential and he deserves more minutes. maybe at first splitter would be ahead of kanter in the rotation, but sooner or later that situation will be reversed. at this point splitter is not a building block but a complementary piece, while there is hope that kanter is a building block. and if he is not, he is still a much younger complementary piece.
Holy crap. Can't even respond, laughing too hard. Kanter!

splitter may be better than kanter as of now but he's like what, 8 years older? imagine the player Kanter could be 8 years from now..Trading for splitter will just hinder Kanters development even more unless he comes off the bench. Ever way I don't see a trade happening unless Leonard comes back which I'm almost certain spurs will not get rid of.

According to Hoopshype, Splitter has a QO for $4.9 mil next year...... Where is this fihure of close to $10 mil a year coming from? Do people actually think he's going to get a better contract than Scola got?

Next year the Jazz need four big men.
There is ZERO chance that those four big men will again be Millsap, Kanter, Favors and Jefferson. I'd argue there's just a slightly greater than zero chance that Jefferson is one of them.
If the Jazz trade for Splitter and his RFA rights, then there's a fairly good chance of them keeping him at a reasonable number while potentially also re-signing Millsap. I think this would be consistent with their approach of making the young guys compete for minutes.

Who knows? It only takes one idiotic GM for a guy to get overpaid. I guess we'll have to see what the market is like this off-season. I doubt he would've received anywhere close to $10M if he'd been a free agent last season. Are teams more likely to spend a ton this off-season?

according to hoopsworld splitter has a 5.87M QO, so it is fair to assume he will get offers which are higher than this qualifying offer. 10M per year is a bit high, but there are a lot of dumb, bad contracts out there and many of them belong to big men. i could see him get a 3 year 8M offer for a total of 24M. i wouldn't the jazz to sign him for that price.

well, if that will happen - whoever signs him for that amount deserves to get stuck with him.

true. and more times than not, teams get stuck with a bloated payroll with no flexibility because of it.
i don't think you're way off base - i agree with the general range you mentioned, i'm just think the eventual contract will be on the lower end of that range. we'll have to wait and see.

yea you all know the examples I could give. This is why I keep harping on Tomic. He costs a lot less than 8 or 10 million a year.

i'm not opposed to us getting him, i'm just not as high on him as i was when we drafted him.
maybe we could use his rights in a deal to move up in the draft? i can only hope.

Re: Sheridan rumor: Big Al to Spurs?
It's simple with Lorbek & Tomic both on contracts with the same team in Spain. They are taking the advice of their agents... hedge... it is all a contract negotiation. I think because of the Fran Vasquez situation some people are getting a little tripped up about this sort of thing.
You show Tomic the dollars and throw some cash for a buyout barcelona's way and he's yours. He wont commit to playing in the NBA until the money is right. Barcelona has gotten great production from Tomic & Lorbek but they aren't playing as well as expected overall... they got some big name (former NBA) guys that aren't really getting it done. So its not like they are contending overseas... Tomic and Lorbek are their chances to get paid... they have the incentive to participate in a buyout not withdraw from it.
