Jazz/Clippers - High Risk, High Reward

Post#1 » by KDBG » Sun Feb 10, 2013 10:25 pm

Jazz fan here.

Jazz are stuck in mediocrity, and the Clippers are one piece away from being the favorites in the West. Jazz make a risk to open up time for Kanter/Favors, and get their Point Guard of the future. An addition by subtraction type deal for the Jazz. The Clippers make a risk to make a push for a title THIS year, while getting insurance in two 2013 1st round draft choices.

Jazz get: Bledsoe, Jordan, Odom
Clippers get: Jefferson, Millsap, UTA 1st (top 3 protected), GS 1st

Risk for Jazz: The Jazz would be giving up our two leading scorers for an offensively challenged Jordan, a player in Odom who would probably never even suit up for the Jazz, and Bledsoe who is super talented, but has never been a full-time starter up to this point. Their young players could possibly never pan out.

Reward for Jazz: The Jazz have an all under 23 old core in Kanter/Favors/Hayward/Burks/Bledsoe. They would be one of the most athletic, exciting teams in the league. Both Jefferson and Millsap will both more than likely walk this summer, and with both Kanter and Favors both being top 3 picks, it's obvious that the young bigs were drafted to both eventually be starters. The Jazz get their long coveted Point Guard of the future in Bledsoe. If Bledsoe reaches his ceiling, he'll be a top 10 PG in a year or two.

Risk for Clippers: They grab two unrestricted free agents. They could both walk in the summer, leaving the Clippers with only 2 mid 1st round draft picks to show for it. If they stick with Billups as the starter at SG, that leaves the Clippers without a true back-up PG. They lose their best low post defender in Jordan.

Reward for Clippers: Jefferson and Millsap both are very efficient big men in their prime, with 20+ PER ratings. That would give the Clippers 4 players in the top 25 PER. A Jefferson/Griffin/Millsap rotation would become the most deadly big man rotation in the league. Millsap and Crawford would lead a scary bench. The Clippers will never have problems putting points on the board whatsoever. They gain more cap flexibility with the trade of Jordan. Jefferson cares more about winning than money, and is very loyal, which would make it likely that he'd stay in L.A.

Jazz Line-up
Kanter/Jordan
Favors/Odom/Evans
Hayward/Ma. Williams/Carroll
Burks/Foye
Bledsoe/Mo. Williams/Tinsley

Clippers Line-up
Jefferson/Turiaf/Hollins
Griffin/Millsap
Butler/Barnes/Hill
Billups/Crawford/Green
Paul/Crawford

Not interested in paying dj that much money to be a bench guy.

I like it, we turn Jordan into a lotto pick in the summer, or find a 3rd team. Maybe Philly.
Ingles is cooked.

I think the basic deal is good value for the Clips WITHOUT the two picks.

I disagree. The Clippers are looking pretty damn good this year (reread that sentence), so they're going to need a lot of incentive to make such wholesale changes.

I like the original deal a lot for the Clippers, because not only would they have a ridiculous front-court trio for the playoffs, they'd have ridiculous flexibility to rebuild in the unlikely case CP3 bolts.
That being said I would try to find a 3rd team to take on one of the Jazz bigs, to maximize the impact of the deal (Granger+Hansbro's EC+1st for Al Jeff and Caron Butler?).

This is a hefty price for the Jazz to pay, and while I understand the desperate need for a L-T PG, I don't think Bledsoe has shown enough to go semi 'all-in' on him, or at minimum using up a bunch of decent assets.
I do think landing DeAndre is smart due to the lack of C's in the league, but I'm still a bit iffy on this one from the Jazz perspective.

Feels like an overpay from the Jazz in trading 2 of their best offensive players plus 2 1st round picks for Bledsoe and a bench big who makes $10mill+. Wouldn't you rather just keep Millsap at that money if that was your plan? Its a good thought but not the best use of Jazz resources.

Woah!

No take backs!

Clippers dangle Jefferson and pick/s for KG.

CP3 / Billups
Green / Crawford
Butler / Barnes / Hill
Blake / Millsap
KG / Hollins / Turiaf

I don`t think I would. The Millsap/Jefferson-experiment has to end if we truly are going to give the young guys a fair shot. Getting the most value from them is not as important as getting the right pieces. Giving Paul and Al up for a young PG like Bledsoe or Vasquez + a decent 3rd big like Hawes or Splitter would be the right move move in my eyes.

I actually like it quite a bit the more I think about it. I'd like to keep our pick, though, and I don't think that it's necessary for this trade.

Seems like an overpay from Utah to me. Bledsoe is severely overrated on realGM. Take out the picks (or at least Utah's) and this is a bit closer. I think Utah still asks for Butler instead of Odom.

I can see why some people would think that the Jazz would be giving up too much, but in this case one man's junk is another man's treasure. Okay, maybe Jefferson/Millsap aren't "junk," but with most of us Jazz fans, we see them as the two culprits holding back Favors' and Kanter's development. Jefferson and Millsap would be more valuable to L.A. then to us. And the two draft picks would be more valuable to them as well.

Can any Jazz fan name me one player in the 12-22 range that you think would be better than any of our 4 young players? If this trade happened, we would have 5 key players under 23 years old. You need to surround those kids with vets, not more draft picks.

And can you name me any PG in the draft that you would take over Bledsoe? A ton of teams in the league are probably lining up to try to acquire Bledsoe, so you're going to have to overpay a little bit. But that brings me to the sad fact, when in the hell have the Jazz ever made an aggressive move? D-Will trade doesn't count. They knew he wasn't going to re-sign. That's why I come here to act out my stupid NBA trade fantasies, like the rest of you, haha. I'm crossing my fingers though that the Jazz front office will grow some balls.

And to those of you who think Bledsoe is overrated, why do you think that? I mean, you're entitled to your own opinion, but his PER is pretty damn good. He's played very well when he was a starter in the games CP3 was out. They were losing those games, but that's more of a testament to how great CP3 is, more than anything else. Obviously, Bledsoe isn't putting up all-star numbers, yet, because he's played in limited minutes for the most part. But in my eyes', and a lot of other people's eyes, including NBA scouts, Bledsoe is the real deal.

Just because the Jazz wouldn't get as good of a player in the draft as they can in a trade doesn't mean that they shouldn't try and keep their draft picks. There will be someone in the 12-22 range that ends up being a surprise, it happens every year. Mine as well hope that it could happen.

The value is there for the clips but I worry about the fit. DJ fits with Blake because he doesn't demand the ball and is a defensive presence in the paint. That isn't the case with Al or Millsap. They are also both free agents so we could lose both for nothing in the offseason. That isn't the case with DJ who is locked up and EB who has another year on his contract. Also EB is the leader of our 2nd unit which has been the best in the league this season and without him we have to rely heavily on Billups who is old and coming off an injury.

You have a point there, but I've been hearing that LA limits DJ's minutes because he's not a very good offensive player, and is a horrible free throw shooter. Al Jefferson would give them one of the top low-post scorers in the game, and is a pretty good free throw shooter for a bigman. Yes, Al gets killed on pick-n-rolls, which is a legit concern. But he also is a fairly decent man-to-man defender, and can block some shots. Also, I'm almost positive Al would re-sign with LA. He is a really good, loyal guy. And he just wants to win.
