Pistons interested in Josh Smith and Gerald Henderson

Post#1 » by Goldtop » Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:31 pm

Detroit Is A Player: The Detroit Pistons took part in the three-team deal two weeks ago that sent forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye to Memphis in exchange for Jose Calderon, who they obtained from Toronto.

The move set the Pistons up to have more than $23 million in cap space this summer to re-tool their roster. If the Pistons can off-load Rodney Stuckey and his $8.5 million player option for next season or Charlie Villanueva and his $8.5 million player option for next season before the trade deadline they could add to that number significantly. League sources peg Stuckey as the easiest chip to move and there is a belief that Detroit is more than open to a deal involving one or both.

With so many ending contracts, there has also been speculation that Detroit would seriously entertain trading some of their own ending contracts like Jason Maxiel or Will Bynum if it could return one of the would-be free agents on their wish-list. The Pistons have been linked to Hawks forward Josh Smith and Bobcats shooting guard Gerald Henderson; both are expected to be offseason targets of the Pistons, especially with so much cap space to play with.

With Monroe and Drummond, we need shooters starting around them. Smith at SF (he's really a PF) is a bad fit. Max money makes it worse.

Henderson could be ok as a low cost bench guy. We could use his athleticism on the wings.

I'm semi-interested in Smith for the right price, but no interest in Henderson, and tbh seeing their names together kind of sounds like a CV/BG 2.0 type deal

Per the wiretap, Brooklyn's top priority is to trade for Josh Smith.

Maybe we somehow get into that deal, making it a 3-way where the Nets get Smith, Hawks get Stuckey and whatever Brooklyn has to offer, and we get Brooks from Brooklyn and a pick(s) from ATL.

If we aren't willing to offer Smoove a max deal then we need not apply IMO.

And I don't think that's something we'd be interested in.

If we got in on that trade, it would be as a sucker to take Hump. They literally have to send him out to get Smith, and Atlanta's not about to take both him and Stuckey.

Atlanta's interested in getting whatever young players/picks NJ can offer (all of which suck), so they wouldn't have Detroit in the deal siphoning them off (but then again, it's no loss, because they all suck).

I'm not sure Brooklyn even has picks to offer anymore after dealing for deron and Joe Johnson....

Something like Smith to Brooklyn, Stuckey/Hump to ATL, and Brooks, ATL crap-salary-filler expiring and ATL pick to us?

I wouldn't mind Smith coming to the Pistons...I just don't think he's worth the max...

To be fair, its not like hoopsworld is the first and only media to report the Pistons having an interest in Smith. Most of the Pistons insiders have been saying it all season. Its the first I heard of Henderson though.

The Pistons interested in Smith is totally understandable. Unless they want to wait 5-7 yrs for LeBron/Carmelo to retire before we start contending again, we're going to need an elite-caliber 3-4 who can match up with them. In reality, not many players exist who fit that description. Smith is one of them. So it makes sense to me.

He also has the kind of versatility that would fit this roster perfect. He could start at SF with Dre and Moose up front. Then anytime a team goes small against us, putting their SF at the 4, we can go Dre/Smith to matchup, while still not technically having to even go small, and be able to defend the stretch 4's, while still being able to defend the paint and rebound.

Plus, he gives you trade flexibilty going forward. Should Monroe/Drummond prove not to fit longterm, you have the ability to trade Monroe for any position you want, and not have to be a trade for another big, because you'd have Smith to play PF next to Drummond.

If the price is right, I think Smith would be a great addition. And I don't think he will get the Max from any teams. So if we can get him for around $14 mil/yr, I say why not. Even better if we could get him right now in a trade for Stuckey/CV, as the money we unloaded would basically cover a year of Smiths salary for nothing extra. And also get to evaluate him for the rest of year to decide if we even want to resign him.

Maybe, trade Bynum to OKC for their #1 pick this year, then package that pick with Stuckey and CV to ATL for Smith. Thats as good or better a deal than BKN is offering.

this

if you read the article , they are just stating that

1) pistons would like to move CV and Stuckey
2.) they have been link to Smith and Henderson

However FO has said

No long term salary, and no moves that will cripple us. We don't have enough to get mith

No interest from me in maxing him out as well, so no thanks. I'm happy to move Stuck and/or CV and the gang, but play it smart Joe

Yeah, if its Stuck/Maggette/Bynum, why not. Who knows, he might show he can play SF.

One thing is apparant after this game - we aren't in position to be turning down top talent should we get an opportunity to acquire a player like Smith.

Uhh yes we are. Handing out a max contract to Smith could be crippling for us. Just because we lack talent right now doesn't mean we need to go out and make hasty moves if it doesn't fit what we need. Must be patient no matter what.
