Strike while the iron's hot so to speak, sure we can keep him and then trade him in the summer but there are risks to waiting that long. One, what if he gets injured later on in the season and has to have surgery in the summer? sort of kills some of our potential deals. Two, what if we keep him and let him become a FA but he gets priced out of our range? i'm sure we'll talk and come to an understanding before he becomes a FA but when that Dollar Figure comes up that he can't refuse then what? I know it's a lot of "What if's" but honestly anything can happen
Do we match his big deal and get killed by the CBA when the new yearly provisions kick in? Or do we just let him walk and get nothing back for a player so valuable? Man i would hate to be Henny around this time, he has some really tough decisions to make
I agree we need to trade him. But, he is unrestricted, so we can't really match an offer. I guess his agent could come to Henny and say, we've got a 7.5 million dollar deal with Chicago, if you can beat that, we'll stay in Orlando.
I also don't think he's going to get overpaid somewhere. Average salary for someone like JJ is 5.25 million. He's a borderline starter or 6th man, and they really don't get paid that much. I think if he could nab a starting spot somewhere, he could get upwards of 7-8 mil a year. Contracts have come down since he signed his last deal. I don't think we can pay him more than Afflalo either, especially if JJ is not starting.
I don't think Henny is worried about the money, but I hope he is thinking about 3-4 years from now, and what JJ will be like then, and what a player or draft pick we could get for him will be like in 3-4 years.
