In my mind, resigning Calderon would be equal to signing Chris Kaman or David West to a large deal in the offseason to start ahead of Drummond.

Drummond has as many holes in his game as Knight, if not more. One could argue that West, for instance, makes us a better team next season - just like Calderon makes us somewhat better immediately too.

I'm starting to get the impression from some of these posters that thats what they want us to become. I honestly think some fans like being in the lotto and talking draft more than winning. Crazy, I know, but its hard to draw any other conclusion when you want to just discard an elite PG for nothing.

That doesn't make any sense because Drummond is a better player right now than Kaman and West, and he's developing perfectly at Center. Knight is not a better player than Calderon and he's not developing at PG. So two completely different scenarios. If thats the reasoning most have for not wanting Calderon then idk what to tell you. Its just not a logical way to view this situation.

I think its debatebale that JC > Knight at PG, when you look at the whole picture.

JC > Knight offensively
JC < Knight defensively

Andre Miller is 37 years old... He was the starter in Philly over a young Lou Williams when he was 32.

Knights proven to be a solid defender at PG over the last few months. But lets not act like he's a Lindsey Hunter lockdown defender. He's got to do a lot more on defense to surpass what Calderon has been doing on offense for 8 yrs.

Calderon's offense >>>>>>> Knights defense.

PG is primarily an offensive position anyways. You wouldn't say Knight is a better PG than Nash because he's a better defender. PGs are generally judged on their ability to run an offense. Calderon can run an offense as good as any PG in the league. Knight has yet to prove he is even capable of running an offense at all. So for that alone, you have to rank Calderon over Knight. And if Frank, who has coached his share of all-star PGs, (Kidd, Rondo, Harris) immediately gives the job to Calderon, that should tell you all you need to know. I don't think Dumars would've agreed to just move Knight, his recent 8th overall pick, to SG for any PG. Calderon is that good that he validates such a move.

A true pg + a dominant wing Otto Porter + a double double Moose and a superstar Brahma Bull will contend for a championship soon

This is a perfect scenario in which literally everything goes our way. Moose takes another step forward and provides 20/10, we get a pick high enough to draft Porter or another wing player and he pans out, and Dre becomes DPOY and perhaps learns a few post moves, to the level of a guy like Noah who's post game is not very pretty but effective.

Likely? Not sure, but it's a place to start and is what we should be aiming for if we want to contend.

As for Calderon, yes I would like to resign him. The skills his brings to the table are invaluable. I still feel that a Calderon/Knight backcourt won't get us anywhere though. I feel that Calderon should be the mentor and backup and that Knight is a 1, unless we draft a big PG who is capable of guarding SGs so that defense wouldn't be an issue. Calderon is not that guy. But he is a true PG in a league where few remain.

Knight is on a cheap rookie deal. He would be a great 3rd guard to 18 minutes @ PG when Calderon is on the bench and 18 minutes when our future SG is resting.

Calderon/Knight
FA or Trade/Knight
FA or Trade/Singler
Drummond/Villanueva
Monroe/FA or Trade

re sign calderon, hes too good to let up and its not even a question. and the only way he comes off the bench next season is if a guy like paul, rondo, or curry end up on the pistons

no, i dont want him back after tonights game. i mean he wont be the long term starter anyway as hes 31 and you can always get backups for cheap. no need to have him stay around and fukking with knights development

Yes, if the price is right.

He's not our long-term future, but I don't think he's a detriment to the team. I'd much rather have Calderon than Stuckey or Bynum on the roster. (writing Bynum's name right there was harder than I thought it'd be)

The real question is how much and for how long would sign him for?

^I'd do a standard MLE deal - 5 yrs, 30 mil. And if we need to outbid another team, I'd up it to 5/35. $7 mil/yr is nothing if it fills a major need, when you have you have $30 mil in capspace this summer, all your top players on rookie deals, and no bad longterm contracts on the books.

5 yrs may seem a tad too long, but the way I see it, he should have at least 3-4 yrs left at this level. But if he starts to waver at any point in the contract and needs to come off the bench to be effecitive, then you got one of the best vet backup PGs in the league and a great 6th man for $6-7 mil/yr, which is pretty much the standard salary for a top 6th man.

This is all very interesting, IMO. Before the trade, NOBODY was interested in going after Calderon as a FA. Now that we traded for him and the Pistons put their PR spin on it, nearly everyone's offseason plans have us re-signing him as a priority.

Not sure how one trade changes everyone's view on the future.
