Useless hypothetical: We signed LeBron in the summer of 2010

Post#1 » by therealbig3 » Fri Feb 15, 2013 8:24 am

Where do we go from there?

Remember, we still have Favors, Harris, and all those picks, so we can make a trade for another star. Knowing what you know now...do you still go after D-Will? Do you trade for Carmelo with or without an extension?

I wouldn't trade for either, personally. I think when you have LeBron...surrounding him with D-Will or Melo is pointless. I'd try and trade for Howard right then and there, tbh. Imagine LeBron and D12 opening up Brooklyn?

Ignore all the useless details, like "Why would LeBron waste a year of his prime in NJ going nowhere" or "Why would LeBron give up on teaming up with two of his best friends in Wade and Bosh" or "Clearly, he made the right choice and went to 2 Finals and won a title in his first two years, and looks primed to win another"...just go with it.

I don't remember our cap situation or assets, so this was difficult. I did some research and Wiki says the salary cap was $58.044M and we would have had $29.344M in cap space before signing LeBron. If he takes the same deal he did with Miami, we'd have $14.5M less to spend. So, $14.844 remaining...

Bosh earned the same number as LBJ in the first year, so I have $300K to spend. Trade Brook and whatever else I need to except for Favors in order to get CP3. Win a ring every year.

One of our cap guys needs to post all the assets, exceptions, etc. we would have had. I'm sure they have it saved

Orlando wasn't even considering trading Dwight at that point.

honestly can't remember our cap situation either but signing Bosh may have been my next move if my intent was to keep Lopez still...

You have to put in it in perspective. Had we signed LBJ we would have also signed a big man. One of Bosh or Boozer is on our roster right now as well. I still maintain the final reason LBJ went to Miami instead of to us was he expected one of Wade or Bosh to follow him no matter what team he chose. When those two decided together to the Heat I think it made Miami a possibility. Right then and there is when I think it clicked for him.

So lets assume we have Bosh. What do you do next? You do exactly what we DID next. You court an unhappy Melo looking for NY.

And if you are Melo looking at what the Nix were then or the Nets calling for you and we have LBJ and Bosh what do you do? Do you shun us like he did?

We would have Melo right now with LBJ and Bosh.

But why would you need Melo when you have LeBron and Bosh? I would forget Melo, and just go after D-Will in that case, or wait until the summer when D12 demands a trade, and go after him.

I'd rather pair D12 or D-Will with LeBron and Bosh than Melo, definitely. Actually, we could probably go after both to be honest. Use a package centered around Favors and Harris for D-Will, like we actually did, and then use a package centered around Lopez for D12.

PG - Deron
SG - Morrow
SF - LeBron
PF - Bosh
C - Howard

another hypothetical, what if Howard doesn't take the extra year and signs with us in the summer... we sign DWILL Lopez, maybe AK 47 for the MLE. Kidd comes on for the minimum cause he knows we're good. then we swing our lotto pick (top 5) and maybe houston pick, or brooks (when his value was higher), for HARDEN, who we sign to the big extension. THIS absolutely kills, that we could have had Harden and instead are stuck with overpaid overhyped dudes like Joe and Gerald. Another reason why patience is key, you never know what kind of steal is gonna fall in your lap if you hold onto your prospects. We needed a Gasol to Lakers or even R Wallace to Pistons in 04 type deal but we couldn't wait.

He demanded a trade right after the 2011 season, during the summer. And there were already rumors that he was unhappy and probably wanted out.

Just wait it out and play a season with LeBron and Bosh most likely, and then go after Dwight during the summer.

I am telling you what I think would have happened. Dwill wasnt available during the Melo thing. Dwill became available once Melo was off the board. He was the big name...he was the guy we get.

And as for rather pair who with who? Doesnt seem to be hurting Miami not having a PG or a center for that matter and having two elite swingmen.

So forget rather. Its what would have happened. We would have been a better version of Miami....

Lebron would have come with Bosh, most probably.

Then yeah, go for D-Will or Dwight. We still had a ton of assets at that point.

But it was too early for Dwight. Probably go for Deron around Harris and picks.

Deron
Morrow
Lebron
Bosh
Lopez

We could probably get a better shooting guard to come here too.

I think we would have gone for Dwight last year using Lopez in the conversation. But, had we added LBJ and Bosh Melo who was the next big name on the market I believe would have agreed to sit down with us instead of refusing which resulted in Proky ending the conversation. Seriously. He sees LBJ and Bosh and NJ offering a package for him to Denver that was BETTER than the Nix package. Doesnt anyone remember that Denver prefered our offer?

The only reason we didnt get Melo is that Melo scared us off. Without a conversation with us to discuss re-signing we walked away. Does anyone really think Melo does that had we added LBJ and Bosh the summer before?

As for Deron...no one knew he was available until after the Melo deal was done. When we got Deron it was a SHOCK. It happened quickly.

Most likely we add Melo, Deron is a Knick and we take a swing at Dwight last trade deadline using Lopez as the core piece. Does Dwight opt in still with Orlando passing a shot to play with likely defending champs of LBJ, Melo and Bosh?
