They do. but the only way I see them using it is if they unload McGee's contract elsewhere first. If they were to use the exception they'd be over or damn near close to the luxury tax.

Just seems like such a massive waste not use it. Such a major advantage to have that.

One team close to the situation consulted Monday night predicted that the Nets would ultimately land Smith via a three-way trade after ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported Feb. 11 that Smith is a prime Brooklyn Nets trade target.

Another team pinpointed the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks as the strongest contenders to win the Smith sweepstakes. The big worry for both of those teams, though, is whether they could really risk trading for Smith when convincing him to re-sign for the long term is likely to be a serious challenge in either city. Especially with Smith said to be angling for a max deal … and with nobody confusing the Suns or the Bucks with Mikhail Prokohorov’s Nets.

Broussard, furthermore, tweeted early Tuesday that the Washington Wizards have made anyone on the roster available for Smith, apart from John Wall, Bradley Beal or Nene Hilario.

Interesting. Can't see Phoenix and Sarver's cheap ass dealing for Smith to give him a max. Guessing Milwaukee is offering Ilyasova in a Smith trade, but Atlanta wouldn't do that.

We might actually have a chance.

we have a good shot at the smith, the hawks may have no resort but to trade him to us, seriously who wants to dump their young studs for a chance to overpay a guy nearing the end of his prime? the wiz have nobody to offer, maybe the pelicans will dangle e gordon? only teams i really see having interest are the near contenders, and only the big market ones have enough dough. the spurs for one, are not desperate enough to throw down 60 mil. we may be. the question is, with smith can we go shoulder to shoulder with miami? and do people seriously expect us to trade for him and then trade for howard an hour later right before the deadline?

Nets get: Smith, Patty Mills
Hawks get: Brooks, Blair, S Jackson, Nets 1st
Spurs get: Hump, Tele, Bogdanovic

The Spurs tend to be a cost conscious team. They will operate at high payroll but tend to have a line. We know they like our Euros but would they be willing to take on Hump for the price of getting them? I could see Crash and one of those guys for Jackson. But Hump? Not sure they would do it...just doesnt feel like their type of deal...unless of course they simply LOVE these two guys.

Next. I think you improved the Hawks deal greatly because as it has been said many times before.... for them Hump is turd of a pick up. They do not want him and you dealt with it even if you do not agree with the rest of us. But...I still dont know if this gets it done. Perhaps if there is literally not one other credible offer for Smith I can see this deal. But! Make no mistake. This is still an awful haul for the Hawks. Awful. Marshon Brooks is a low level type of prospect right now. His stock is not high.

Overall? Much better job with this trade than the other one so many of us told you wouldnt fly....but I still think they pass.

BTW...for what its worth I would love to be wrong. I know you have been persistent on the Smith hunt with basically no one agreeing with you...but hey, it would be great to find out Ferry isnt the savvy guy most think he is.

I can respect THIS^.

What Ive been saying all along is that Smith has all the leverage. It's obvious that his agent wants Brooklyn. That is why I think we get him.

It's not a good haul for Josh Smith but that's because the Hawks played this poorly. They tried to play it like the Magic did with Dwight. The only problem is that the Magic had 29 potential suitors for Dwight. Smith has a limited market. He is not the type of player you build around but he is the type of player you add to a fringe team that makes them legit.

I think we are getting him.

The thing is, we need a third team like the Cavs to make a deal work.

That would cost us a pick just to turn Hump into a expiring contract because Hump is a negative asset. Then we'd need to send Brooks (who I don't rate anyway) and potentially 2 1st's for Smith.

So that would end up being Hump, Brooks, 3 1sts while paying Smith $94m over 5 years.

Personally I wouldn't do that deal. I believe this would be a poor short sighted knee jerk move UNLESS we flip Lopez for Howard as well.

Teams dont have to give up "young studs" to top our offer. I mean, our offer is pretty pedestrian. Humphries, who still has 1 year left on his deal after this season and Marshon Brooks is about as weak a package you could send. no expirings, no young guys with potential, and our pick would be in the 20's.

the spurs for one, are not desperate enough to throw down 60 mil. we may be. ?

The spurs dont need to throw down 90 million. they could simply rent josh smith and go for a title this year, then let him walk:

Stephen Jackson (expiring 11M contract)
Dejuan Blair (decent young big, cheap, expiring)
Mills or Gary Neal
1st

Thats a much better package then we can offer. The spurs could make that, make a title run this year, then let smith walk. since jackson/Blair are already expiring really all they are giving up to rent smith would be mills and a late first, which they could certainly just purchase for 3M in what will be a weak draft

smith loses any leverage the second a team is willing to rent him. and i can certainly see the spurs renting him, if all it costs them is their expirings and a first or mills.

the hawks simply will not take on salary in a deal for smith, without getting a young established player or a potential top 15 pick. the nets cant offer anything close to that. unless we find someone to give us an expiring for humphries, we have ZERO chance to get snith.

Hump/brooks is an awful deal for the hawks. Hump/brooks/teletovic/1st/bogs might get it done, not sure if atlanta would prefer that to a salary dump + pick. id assume theyd prefer to shed the salary

i think he would be a lock to play. we are dying for a backup SG tog ive us solid mintues and could definitly use teh 3 point shooting.

right now, we dont even have a back up SG.

id make that trade in a second. no one we get in the 20's in this upcoming draft is going to be as good as reddick in all likelyhood

you know, unless is a clear **** up trade(i.e. Wallace trade), i would be content if we made any move, whether its a Smith, Millsap, bargs, JJ, KG, PP, Wright, Granger, Gordon, Gordon, whomever.....

cause all this talk and talk from ourselves really created an unsatisfiable hunger for Thursday.

I'll be pissed(again) if we stood pat and did nothing. That would bring back old memories of a once distant memory of the old days. I want to see we are trying to upgrade/improve our roster(since we can't fire the coach now lol) for a playoff run.

I'd be fine with standing pat and doing nothing or at least swapping Hump for Gordon and maybe getting a 2nd rounder off the Bobcats as well.

I don't think the Spurs want to risk having an un-resigned and disgruntled Josh Smith on their roster ruining their team's chemistry.

If they make a deal for him, they better be prepared to meet his demands or he can be very toxic.

Say what you want about the trade, but Deron/Joe/Wallace/Smith/Lopez is an absurdly stacked starting line-up. At least on paper.

no way man, i can't entertain the thought of Evans starting, Evans actually getting significant minutes, Evans actually playing in crunch time whether its on O or D, Hump coming off the bench, Doom brothers with the ball, i couldn't handle that going into the playoffs(if).... no way lol....

Hump for Gordon, should've taken it despite Gordon's rep right now...
