It's only a matter time before Love asks out.
How are we getting Love if we can't even get Josh Smith?

Our actual assets (Brooks and the Euro stash) are decent at best, and not good enough to get someone like Love. Now unless you're talking about Lopez for Love, that's a different story. But about 10 teams in the league will beat our offer for Love.

Hump will now be a true expiring contract.

It's way more attractive to have a guy on a contract for 1 year than it is for someone with more than 1 year of salary left to pay.

I understand that but Humphries is still negative value. I'm not even talking about Humphries in a deal for Love, I'm talking about our assets with actual value (Brooks, Bogdanovic, Karaman, late 1st round pick), which won't be anywhere near enough to get a player like Love. Love isn't even a free agent in 2014 anyway, so he won't be an expiring next year. We won't have much leverage at all.

Because Humphries had negative value before now? Now he's simply an expiring that can actually play somewhat, unlike the other expirings that are usually over the hill.

Not at all. Now the Nets actually do have some assets, especially if the Nets buy another two or three Euros this draft. Enough to get Love in a vacuum? No, of course not. But if he tries to force his way somewhere, with the Nets being the spot? There's a chance. And that chance would be even greater if it wasn't for the pick swaps in 2014 and 2015.

You're missing the point. It doesn't necessarily have to be a Humphries + for Love deal. Who knows, maybe Humphries is traded on draft night to the Bobcats for Ty Thomas and the Pistons pick, which would be another asset. Then, using Ty Thomas' expiring in 2015 and all the accumulation of assets, the Nets may be able to make a deal for Love if he forces his way out. It's not always black and white like many people make it seem. There are variables, ideas that can be used as leverage in order to get something bigger than it appears on first glance.

Not to mention we now will make a 1st round selection who could be a good asset moving forward. Shengelia might turn into a good player next season, Taylor as well. A lot of things can happen now but we're going to have more assets next season than we had this season.

Also don't dismiss how valuable Hump now is to teams with the new lux tax kicking in. 1st round picks due to being on cheap contracts have real value and with us being willing to take on bad contracts to get the right player, we're one of the only teams not making cuts due to the tax.

We're in a very good position going forward.

No, that's not the way it works.

Players that are one year deals aren't considered for their playing ability, they're considered for their contract.

Hump's 1 year deal allows for teams to get rid of a disgruntled star who makes a lot of money or to take on a good player on a bad deal since he (again) makes so much money.

Just go back and look at the deal for Vince Carter.

That's how most disgruntled stars get dealt. For cap space/expiring contracts, young players and picks.

I get that unless King completely screws it up somehow (I can't put it past him), we're in a much better position at next year's deadline than we were at this one...but the thought of having to watch Hump and Evans as our PF combo for the rest of the year and throughout the playoffs (however long they are for us) just makes me feel depressed.

Looks like this is the team that finishes the season.

Let's see what happens at draft time, who we get, and how much more valuable Hump looks to another team after this season.

I'm not missing the point, I understand the value of an expiring contract. But you have to understand what the rest of the league can offer too. If Love is on the block, there are going to be offers for him from most teams in the league. With what we have, it's simply not possible to have the assets to beat all those offers. Even if we were to magically turn Humphries into a good 1st round pick, we still don't have the assets. You're overestimating the value of Eurostash as trade assets, not because they aren't good prospects, but because of the difficulty in getting them to the NBA (with their Euro contracts, buyouts, and willingness). Marshon's value will keep dropping unless he gets more playing time and performs well. We are likely to have a early-mid 20s 1st round pick in this year's weak draft, but who knows what that turns out to be. Unless its a hidden gem, I just don't see how we will get Love. There's also the fact that Love is not an expiring next year. Hence, Wolves have no reason to trade him next year because they'll still have leverage.

You know that thing where a superstar says "I want to go to this team and I will only re-sign with this team"?

Yeah, that has a BIG effect on things.

Problem is that there won't be a Josh Smith or Paul Millsap next year.

I get that aspect of it. And I realize that there are various blocs here, where some believe in my way of thinking (I say my not out of ego, but out of convenience, I could say Northern if you so desire) and some don't believe in it. So when something happens that furthers the various goals of those two ways of thinking on either side, it can be depressing to the otherside, so I understand the feelings. You've always been right in the middle in regards to moves, so it's probably even stranger of a feeling for you.

Yea, except when that leverage is gone, because the player cannot go to that team in FA.

A true expiring, plus a good pick (using my Humphries idea as a cursor), plus three first round picks, plus Euro stashes can get the job done for a very good player. I mean, it's basically what got the Knicks Carmelo Anthony...

What the Mavericks do with Dirk will be interesting. If they fail to get Howard, it may be something to watch.

The KG+Pierce trade that was thrown around here seems a lot more possible next year, with Humphries being a true expiring, and then a bunch of young mid-level assets. Look at Boston this year, and then imagine them a year older, with a Rondo recovering from ACL surgery. I definitely think they try to move both of them next deadline. They quite possibly can't with KG, because of the no-trade clause, but I think it's pretty much a lock that unless Pierce retires, or gets bought out, he's being traded next year.

@sam_amick
The Magic are expected to waive Hakim Warrick, who they received in the deal with Charlotte that sent Josh McRoberts to Bobcats.

Any interest?
