Re: Countdown to the Trade Deadline
Well, that was a bummer.
Hopefully, Mo can come back and make enough of an impact to get the Jazz into that 5th spot, the only realistic chance of making it to the second round of the playoffs. If that doesn't happen, and there are no S&Ts of Al or Sap, I will be left wondering what could have been had either last draft or this trade deadline.
On an unrelated Jazz note, I can't believe that neither the Nets or Clips would have given up a first rd pick for Hickson, or that Indiana didn't make a bigger play for Redick or even Crawford.

If you are a small market team fan you love how this deadline played out. The CBA is working out pretty well for the owners and it keeps these teams more balanced. It only sucks for the players and the big market teams that wanted their club to go out and get Al Jefferson to help them over the top.

Re: Countdown to the Trade Deadline
This CBA doesn't help small market teams. Making the luxury tax more punitive hurts owners like the Millers an awful lot more than it hurts Prokhorov, the Lakers/Knicks, or billionaires like Micky Arison or Cuban.
And it's not like free agents will just start signing in Minnesota or Utah either. The best players will sign in the major 5-6 markets, and other teams won't be able to spend enough to offset the exodus of talent from smaller markets to larger ones. How will you compete with Miami, the Lakers, OKC if you can't go into the luxury tax? You have two options:
1. Tank and hope you draft talent that can match those teams
2. Don't compete. Hope for a miracle.

The way I see it it prevented the big market teams who were desperate to compete this year from taking on the additional salary from guys like Al Jefferson, Josh Smith. That means that teams looking to move those guys had very poor trade offers (if you believe reports coming from front offices).
It's really too early to judge whether the Jazz's cap position vis-a-vis the new CBA will ultimately benefit them or not.

The CAP position only works with prudent management. We really can't afford both Milsap and Jefferson. It also means second or third level players like Carroll and Foye can't get huge raises.

We have a top 5 front office but bottom 5 ownership.

... would the vague promise of a new jumbotron next year (maybe) change your mind?
You're clearly not listening to enough Randy Rigby propaganda. I'm calling Matt Harpring to get your JazzNation membership card revoked.

I have to disagree with this. The repeater tax is so heavy that everyone in the NBA is afraid of it. And this is what will kill super teams (Miami).
Harden was traded for one reason... the CBA. And you guys are thinking about this way too deep.
The casual fan is pissed at the bobcats because they haven't gone out and got a star player.
The yuppie suit season ticket holder for the jazz would have been annoyed if the Jazz traded away their best player and got something they deemed "lesser" back.
Overall this CBA is going to keep teams more even and give smaller teams (that make smart moves) a fighting chance to win.
Don't let me give you the impression that big markets don't have an advantage... they still do... but the NBA is stealing for the NFL's socialism playbook. All owners love the new CBA. The small markets and cheapskates happen to love it more than Miami.

Yes. OKC and Memphis traded their star player because they couldn't afford it. They're small markets, and illustrate why the CBA will disproportionately impact smaller markets with less margin for error.
Who did the Lakers, Heat, or Knicks give up who was significant because of the CBA?

Again I'm not saying major markets don't have the advantage. But let me ask you this... what did the Lakers, Heat, or Knicks gain?
The Heat are hurting bad for a center who'd they get? The Knicks got a bunch of big guys down with injuries. There big move was to go out and sign Kenyon Martin. These big market teams are afraid to add big contracts with years on them. The Knicks can't give Amare away... and they are a big market team that tried to dump him for a bag of chips.
The NBA had already embraced a pretty strong soft cap after the KG contract. Now that soft cap is even harder and there is more socialism in the NBA.
Where the heck do you think the luxury tax and repeater tax money goes? This is a business... and the NBA is embracing two things. Socialism... and keeping stars spread out.
The Mark Cuban mindset now gets taxed to hell. And the frugal owners that run their clubs like a business profit off it... even if they don't have a lot of butts in the seats.

What would make Greg Miller a top 5 owner? Which teams have the top five owners?

One of the top 5 just died. Mark Cuban is one. I guess Buss is gone so I don't know if you count him. For a small market the Nuggets have proven when they think they have a chance to win they will spend so I suppose Josh Kroenke could be in the top 5 (just why did they spend on guys like AI... IDK). The carnival cruise guy is in it lol.

What makes them top 5 though? Other than being extremely rich? Miller's net worth isn't going to sky rocket into the top 5 of the NBA any time soon.

When you have a legit chance... puting winning over profits. Caring more about the W than the $.
The NBA is more business oriented which means the dynasties are going to go away. You don't want a team winning a bunch of rings.... you want to spread it out. Jerry Buss was trying to hang on long enough to get past the celtics in ring count. That man cared about winning... and he was a top 5 owner.

Re: Countdown to the Trade Deadline
Larry H Miller was a good owner. I mean without him we would have never had a NBA team.
The tradeline is over. The offseason is going to be even wilder. I guess we can make predictions on who stays and who goes. I think if we can land one big contract player we could probably drop three or four contracts for him.
We got a core group of guys, with two 2nd rounders. Plus we got two new 1st round picks, and another 2 round pick. You add one big contract and then maybe a contract like Carroll and you got a 10+ man team.

The offseason won't be wild, it will just be bitching and moaning about the fact that since trading Deron, we still have the exact same collection of assets and none of them besides Hayward get anywhere near enough playing time.
I don't understand giving up the ability to rebuild with some of the best young pieces in the NBA in favor of becoming a treadmill team.

Re: Countdown to the Trade Deadline
I strongly believe that because we didn't trade Paul Millsap or if we attempt to resign him in the summer Favors will ask for a trade or just walk for the most money possible in 2014. You have to wonder if he is content playing the minutes he is, same with Burks? I bet Burks walks too, and his talent and ability is unbelievable; the Jazz will just irritate him too by continuing to bury him on the bench. Also who right now think we should have just kept Devin Harris? I do, at least we would have been playing him over Earl Watson and he is expiring this summer.
Ingles is cooked.

Re: Countdown to the Trade Deadline
Word.
I'm so distraught over the likelihood of Favors and Burks leaving that I'm going to start cheering for the Pelicans in advance of this eventual talent exodus. In fact, I'm going to get revenge on Denis Lindsey tonight by eating three Crown Burgers in one sitting. Take that, you failure!
Don't expect me to stick around and b1tch online every day for the next two years! Not me! The Jazz are doomed, and I can see it because I'm a damned genius! GO NO!
