JC is one of the least efficient players in the league, a shot-jacker who ruins the offensive flow and plays terrible defense. Don't you think GMs around the league know this, too? And he had become a cancer, interfering with the good team dynamic the Wizards have built. So the Wizards essentially cut him. And there is some value to eliminating his $2.2 million contract next year. While alone it doesn't open up any cap space, if we make other moves this summer (trade Okafor or Ariza), then that space will become valuable. Yes, I would have preferred a 2nd round pick as well, but we have no idea if anyone offered that.
....and on top of that...most players picked in the second rd turn out to be worthless, non contributors anyway.
And yet teams pay $2.5 million for them. Think of it as EG giving away money.
I have no idea if anyone offered a 2nd. Under different management, I imagine Crawford with higher trade value at the deadline. Under a different GM, I imagine higher return on that trade. It doesn't take a great imagination to see that, just a look at EG's track record. He's the perpetual sucker at the table. At this point in his career, EG becomes a punch line even when he makes relatively minor moves. He's the Inspector Clouseau of the NBA.
One bright side to this trade: dumping Crawford on the heels of dumping Mack perhaps shows Terd and Ernie slowly getting over their own brilliance in assembling the team's spectacular young core. They better be willing to go a little further, as I can't see this team going far with all four of Booker, Seraphin, Vesely, and Singleton still on the roster. I predict they will depart in ascending draft order (cause that's how they do), so Booker's next.
