Danny Ferry decline trades because he wants to re-sign Josh

Post#1 » by tcorbin » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:46 am

Ferry: At the end of the day we just felt that we value Josh. I think that he is an important part of this team. We are in a situation with him that we can re-evaluate things this summer together and decide if it’s a situation with his free agency that he continues here.

Honestly I'd at least try to resign Smoove (not to the max of course, maybe to 13-15 mil per year) rather than accept that trash from the Bucks: a team that we're fighting with in the playoff race)

Of course Ferry would say this. WHat else would he say?

"We tried to move him but all we got offered was crap, so i guess we are stuck with him"

Im now convinced the ONLY way Josh Smith stays is if there is a MAJOR coaching change. But I think Ferry decided that we are going to be mediocre this season and next, Josh is already on our books, can finish out the season and move on.

Theres really no "letting him walk away" problem when there was nothing offered for him in the first place via trade

WTF is that for?

Lets use our heads

Ferry knows this is a 2-3 year project. Remember he builds teams for a living. He walked into arguably one of the worst situations in the NBA. He annexed us from the JJ contract, and moved worthless Marvin Williams. Brought in Korver, Williams and expiring contracts. We would have LOTs of spending money in the 13 offseason. The only X FACTOR was signing Josh Smith.

The Hawks were going to be mediocre this year, that was a given considering the talent and the talent lost. Mediocre meaning 5th-6th seed which is what we normally are anyways. Sign SMOOV or let him walk, or trade him, who cares we still have tons of money to spend in 13 offseason.

The question became , would you rather have Smith for 30 games and lose him, or trade him for MUCH WORSE talent or other potential bad contracts (humphries, Amare , etc). Well, as a GM hes thinking , if im losing Smith ANYWAY, i might as well have him for 30 games, because the Hawks are better with a Josh Smith than a Kris Humph and Marshon Brooks or 3 D Leaguers from Bucks.

The problem the Hawks now face is having tons of money to buy free agents, and no real free agents to draft. Its like having the #1 pick in the worst college draft class.

We pretty much know for sure CP3 is staying in LA land. D12 has repeatedly said he doesnt want to play in Atlanta.

go look at the free agents coming up. Do you honestly see a group of 2-3 guys that are going to DRASTICALLY change us in 2013-14? Do you think we blow ALL our money in 13 offseason? I dont think so.

Id like to sign someone like JJ HIckson maybe Mayo, Jefferson/milsap some of those are great players but no real SUPERstar.

the 2014 Free Agency class is going to be MUCH more attractive IMO for what the Hawks need. I think we offer Smoov a decent contract, he will walk, we will pick up some good position players but I see us having another season as "low key" or mediocre by design to really make a run in the 14-15 season. I just dont see the talent out here this offseason or draft picks to really jump up to the #3-4 seed.

We would have to have players that can honestly compete against
Miami- LBJ WADE BOSH
KNICKS- MELO, CHANDLER, JR SMITH
Chicago-Rose, Deng

Assuming we lose Smoov, i dont see that happening until A) Major coaching change that will attract top flight talent B) 14/15 season when much more free agents are available.

it just sounds like generic BS to me. you dont decide you want to resign or let guys go in the middle of the season.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
